The Great Wizards of Antiquity by Guy Ogilvy, mentioned here in the previous posting, has a Chapter, and asides, about time-travelers (and those who appear to have experienced missing-time) in Chapter 4, Plague-Busters, Skywalkers, and Time-Travelers [Page 99 ff.].
Guy Ogilvy (aka Francis Melville) tells readers about Epimenides, whom Pythagoras was anxious to meet, and thus traveled to Crete to find “the legendary tattooed prophet, seer and ‘purification’ priest.”
Epimenides, as a young shepherd, was said to have entered a cave to rest after searching for a lost sheep. “When he awoke [and] returned to his village, [he] could find no one he recognized” and when he finally found his brother, the brother was an old man, but Epimenides had not aged. “The brother told him that he [Epimenides] had disappeared fifty-six (some say forty) years before.”
The cave was said to be Zeus’s sacred cave and Epimenides, while he slept, “met and conversed with the gods …” and he, Epimenides, “with such … newfound powers. [such] as prophecy, plague-busting, and catharsis … Became known to the Greeks as theophilistatos, ‘the most beloved of the gods’ [and] was said to have lived for 157,, 199, or even 299 years … [and eventually] was worshipped as a god after his death.” [Pages 100-101]
Ogilvy goes on to write that Epimenides’ “tattooed skin [was] flayed from his body following his death and preserved on display at the court of the ruling ‘Ephores’ in Sparta.” [Page 101]
(The details about tattooing are interesting and pertinent to the Epimenides account.)
Ogilvy recounts the story of Aristeas, “a high-born citizen of Proconnesus … who lived some time in the seventh century BC” – Ogilvy calling him a time-traveler and shape-shifter.
“One day he went into a shop and dropped down dead … News of his death quickly spread around the town, but was … contradicted by someone claiming to have spoken to him on the road to Cyzicus.”
When his family arrived at the shop, Aristeas’ body was not there. “Having vanished without a trace.” He “appeared in Proconnesus seven years later, claiming that he had been possessed by Apollo and found himself travelling [sic] to … Hyperborea … before he vanished again … Two hundred and forty years later he reappeared in Metapontum.” [Page 129]
In Chapter 5, The Man with the Golden Thigh, Ogilvy relates that, in 1774, “Alfonso de Liguori was meditating and fasting while locked in his prison cell … After emerging from a trance, he told his fellow prisoners that he had been at the bedside of the dying Pope Clement XIV in Rome. Rome was a day’s journey away and official word of the Pontiff’s passing did not arrive until late the next evening.”
With that news of the Pope’s death also came “a list of clerics who attended to the Pope in his last hours. Included in the list was … Alfonso de Liguori … Dozens of eyewitnesses all agreed that [Alfonso] had been in Rome, praying and speaking to others, while in fact he was in his locked cell in Arezzo more than one hundred miles away.” [Page 145]
And Mr. Ogilvy finishes the Chapter with The Wind-Walkers, citing Alexandra David-Kneel observation, in her book, Magic and Mystery in Tibet, of a man spotted in Lhasa seeming “to lift himself from the ground, proceeding by leaps … as if he had been endowed with the elasticity of a ball …” [Page 146]
Oglvy also notes Lama Anagorika Govinda’s book The Way of the White Clouds about the wind-walkers.
The Ogilvy book is a thought-producer, and listed as Book 1 of The Great Wizards of History trilogy (from Llewellyn Books, which can be found via Google and on Facebook and Twitter).
This is not a formal review by me but an enthusiastic endorsement of the footnoted and exemplary account(s) of some wizards of the ancient past who, apparently, engaged in mystical activities and tasks that students of the paranormal should know.
