The ongoing academic stalemate about UFOs

Let me re-reference my note about Scott Soames book The World Philosophy Made, reviewed by Alexandre Leskanich in TLSApril 22, 2020 {Page 33].

My dear friend Bryan Sentes, a true academic, dislikes blather, florid commentary, “unanchored hyperbole” and “hollow rhetoric.” Also, “pointless and useless and boring and exhausting” rhetoric is not his cup o’ tea.

This comes by way of messages to me about some comments left here, including my own I think.

His critique of how people interact nowadays, via Facebook, blog comments, conversations, and all the other methods of inter-communication is not lost on me nor on others of a civil and intelligent bend.

But his colleagues and fellow academics have brought this on themselves.

Scott Soames, whose book was castigated by reviewer Leskanich, mostly because Scott Soames is, apparently, a trump supporter or, at least, does not disapprove of many Trumpisms that have infected, as we anti-Trumpers see it, much in American society.

The idea that Trump is a threat to the American Constitution is not lost on many, and Scott Soames leaning toward the “President” doesn’t sit well with the academic crowd and those with an intellectual, civilized demeanor, so reviewer Leskanich’s dislike of Mr. Saomes ideologies and book is understandable, almost.

Just as I have to bite my tongue when it comes to such alleged anti-Semites as Heidegger while accepting that many of his ideas are profound, they are marred by a heavy dose of thought malevolence when it came to Jews, Ms. Leskanich could have pressed Soames on his Trump addiction while seeing the worth of his views on philosophy.

Because Professor Soames is said by Ms. Leskanich to be “erudite” his “scope is unsuited to his philosophical temperament, and he lacks the stylistic capacity to make his story compelling. It underwhelms” because Soames “never adequately qualified” his statement that “philosophy makes progress.”

Instead Soames’, as I noted previously, “one-sided account of philosophical ‘advancement’ seems jarring, even defunct … [with] its menacing authoritarians, dissembling demagogues and miasma of infotainment this noxious, rapidly warming world exhibits not the triumph of ‘rational inquiry’ [but] … the implosion of reason itself.” [TLS, Leskanich, Page 33]

Soames understands that intellectual dialogue, of the highest kind, within philosophy has not brought anything near civilized behavior or logical thought by humankind.

That Bryan Sentes hangs on to that canard – philosophy enhances life – because he is confused, as most of us are, by the floppy dialectics that are recorded in the plethora of philosophical tomes that lie dormant in many libraries, personal and public.

Bombarding UFO discussion with references to philosophical bromides does harm to the phenomenon and, more importantly, those who reflect upon it.

UFOs are a special animal in the sea of mysteries that haunt humankind. It can’t be subdued by logic or philosophical inquiry.

Bryan keeps trying to quell the UFO enigma with that sloppy philosophical discipline that Scott Soames recognizes as such, as do some of us not as brilliant as Dr. Soames or even Bryan Sentes, whom I just think is paralyzed by the immense effluvia of philosophical dialectic he’s been submersed in since forever?

The academic path to knowledge is admirable but flawed and obviously deficient if Scott Soames likes Trump and Bryan Sentes thinks academic thought will solve the UFO riddle.

Sorry Bryan. I luv ya, but Philosophy is not the road to a happier or more intelligent life. It just isn’t.
