Pulling Out of the Gray
A month and a half ago, I reported that my blues had started to shift into “gray” or low-grade depression, which I know from previous experience can, at least for me, get really bad, really fast.
Happily, I can now report a turn-around. It wasn’t easy. But I started doubling down on the preventative measures, like 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D every single day, more exercise when possible, more socializing (even when I really didn’t want to), staying away from alcohol (not that I had much to begin with) and so on. If that alone had not worked, I would have begun St. John’s Wort as a supplement. If THAT had not worked, then I would have gone to my N.P. (Nurse Practitioner) for Prozac for 6 months to a year until I was out of that zone again.
But it seems I caught the slide early enough to reverse it with far less. YAY!
Grim news in the world aside, I’m starting to write more again, read more again, engage more again. Talk. Dance. You get the drift. I might want to hide in my room all the time, but it’s not good for me to follow that compulsion. I allow myself my cave time, of course– I can’t function without getting “away” from the world. But light, motion, and interaction are required for my mental, as well as physical, health.
It also helps that I did not have an abduction period when I expected it. Those always throw me off for weeks, if not months, afterwards. I don’t know what-all is happening “up there” but my personality gets a little warped for a while every time. I pull out of it again, sure– but it’s yet another stressor in a world full of ‘em, and right now I’m not exactly resilient.
I’m thankful too that spring has sprung here in the PNW as well. Our frogs “popped” last week, which means 3 months of nightly bliss. Our daffodils and jonquils emerged and bloomed. And of course the very first leaves are popping out on the “scrub willows” that line all the creeks and ditches all over the place here. I even saw my very first red bud blooming (which are everywhere in the Midwest and East, but have to be specially planted in the West.) The air is fresher and smells better and the world feels and looks green.
All to the good.
Last week, I finally got my At Spiral’s End Livejournal updated (from August of last year– egads!) and managed some catch-up on LJ. I don’t want to dwell too much on news (which you can get anywhere) but more on what it means for prepping specifically as we go. I have a lot to do this week– Ostara plans and calling the oral surgeon and spring cleaning… but I’m okay with that for the first time in a while.
