Why You Should Never Drink Sodas Again

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

If you`re wondering what makes sodas so delicious that you just want to drink more and more… it`s flame retardant. I`m kidding. That`s not the ONLY chemical that makes sodas delicious. There are many others, but flame retardant has just been discovered in soft drinks like Mountain Dew, Fanta Orange, Squirt, and some flavors of Gatorade and Powerade.

source: www.naturalnews.com

According, to Natural News, this type of chemical found in soft drinks contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a patented flame retardant for plastics that has been banned in foods throughout Europe and in Japan.

In US, on the other hand, it`s found in about 10 percent of sodas.

Environmental News tells us a bit more about the effects in an article: “After a few extreme soda binges — not too far from what many gamers regularly consume – a few patients have needed medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine.

And these are just the most common effects. Studies (on both animals and humans) have shown that high doses of BVO can be lead to lower fertility (or even infertility), early puberty onset and impaired neurological development. It also build up in the heart, liver and fat tissue and may appear in breast milk, as well.

But even if the evidence is as clear as it can get, the FDA still considers “safe” to have flame retardant in our drinks. Here`s the e-mail ABC News received in their inbox:

Brominated vegetable oil  is considered safe by FDA for use as a flavoring adjuvant in fruit-flavored beverages based on a large margin of safety between the expected human exposure from its use and the highest no-observed-adverse effect levels from several long-term animal studies that were conducted on this substance”.

But WHY is there flame retardant in our drinks in the first place? No matter the dose, I find it abnormal to have such chemicals in food and drinks. And if the whole Europe and Japan agrees with me on this one, then maybe I`m not just a paranoid consumer.

In fact, there were others before me asking why soft drinks producers in the US don`t switch to a safer adjuvant, like they did in the EU. And the answer is “it`s too expensive”. And that`s coming from companies with millions of dollars in profit! It`s too expensive not to give you cancer, infertility and brain development issues. And FDA thinks they`re doing a pretty good job at it, so they`re off the hook.

Just as they managed to get away with a lot of other chemicals found in sodas, as well as in plastics, kerosene or hormonal meds. A biologist who conducted studies on chems found in soft drinks was so alarmed by what she discovered, that she swore never to consume such products ever again:

source: www.dailymail.co.uk

And she`s not the only one who came to this conclusion. Just take a look at these test results:

  • Even moderate consumption — a can a day, or just two a week — may alter our metabolism so that we pile on weight.
  • In children, soft drinks have been linked to addict-like cravings, as well as twisting kids’ appetites so they hunger for junk food.
  • A study conducted by Bangor University suggested they can cause weight gain and long-term health problems if drunk every day for as little as a month.
  • Soft drinks alter metabolism, so that our muscles use sugar for energy instead of burning fat.
  • They also increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Blood tests found soft-drink fans had higher levels of harmful inflammation in their blood vessels, and lower levels of ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.
  • Meanwhile, soft drinks with high levels of fruit juice may cause severe long-term liver damage, according to an Israeli study.
  • People who drank two cans of these drinks a day were five times more likely to develop fatty liver disease — a precursor to cirrhosis and liver cancer. (info from www.dailymail.co.uk)

So next time when you`re holding a soda can in your hand, thinking how delicious it tastes, think of what makes it so delicious: flame retardant and other chemicals that turn your body into jello. That should turn your craving into disgust in no time.

This pisses me off! Thanks MFSP! I did NOT know that. It’s just another reason for me to hate fizzy drinks (soda drinks).

You failed to mention which drinks contain Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO). Wikipedia’s article on the subject says that it is put into Citrus-flavored soft drinks.

They replaced Iodine with Bromine in flour (bread) back in the late ’70′s….lack of iodine in the body creates thyroid problems.

Before I had even seen this article today (2 Feb 13), I had decided yesterday (1 Feb 13) to stop drinking Diet Coke and all other carbonated soft drinks starting today (2 Feb 13) for the next three months just to see if there would be any difference (weight loss, feel better, etc.). We’ll see what happens in 90 days!

Are you frigging kidding me? Diet anything is the worst cancer causer out there, and I drink soda every day! It is the fake sugar man. Aspartame, sacharrine, fructose, sucrose, ect … it’s all bad. That’s why I go for retro Mountain Dew. Sure the sugar is white processed, but at least it won’t give me instant cancer. Try non sugared fruit juice mixed with tonic water. You might be surprised at how good it tastes.Shweppes is owned by the Devil hisself I hears, but maybe there is another brand. This information has been out there for like 30 years now. Get with it folks.

Fructose is not an artificial sweetener, it is a natural sweeteners. Sucrose is derived from processing Fructose, the method of processing fructose is mainly what makes it unhealthy and poisonous.

Fructose, or fruit sugar, is a simple monosaccharide found in many plants. It is one of the three dietary monosaccharides, along with glucose and galactose, that are absorbed directly into the bloodstream during digestion. Fructose was discovered by French chemist Augustin-Pierre Dubrunfaut in 1847.[3] Pure, dry fructose is a very sweet, white, odorless, crystalline solid and is the most water-soluble of all the sugars.[4] From plant sources, fructose is found in honey, tree and vine fruits, flowers, berries, and most root vegetables. In plants, fructose may be present as the monosaccharide and/or as a molecular component of sucrose, which is a disaccharide.

Commercially, fructose frequently is derived from sugar cane, sugar beets, and corn and there are three commercially important forms. Crystalline fructose is the monosaccharide, dried, ground, and of high purity. The second form, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a mixture of glucose and fructose as monosaccharides. The third form, sucrose, is a compound with one molecule of glucose covalently linked to one molecule of fructose. All forms of fructose, including fruits and juices, are commonly added to foods and drinks for palatability and taste enhancement, and for browning of some foods, such as baked goods.

Splenda, (sucralose) is an artificial sweetener as are the other two you mentioned, though.

Yet another reason to not drink that crap. Finding out where aspartame came from put me over the top. E Coli waste product, like honey from bees, the excrement from mold into penicillin. I think the aspartame is insane , who tasted it and said, wow now that is really sweet lets put t into every thing even tho it comes from a dangerous killing microbe.

There really seems no end to the junk we get force fed.

      • Realist

I happen to like honey, and i can assure you that if someone calls honey as excrement in my hearing range, that person will regret it, regardless of gender or age. Besides, honey doesn’t really taste like excrement, but then, i also haven’t devoured dung, unlike you, to know the difference between crap and food.

        Go play in a traffic.

      • Tina912

Mellissa, you seem to bee misinformed a bit on honey. Eating natural RAW honey is very good for you, so long as you aren’t allergic to bee’s. As a bee gathers nector from the various plants it visits, it brings with them all the healing properties of those plants. Then it combines them within the comb with it’s own natural enzymes and such to create a powerhouse of a product that us humans benefit from on many levels.

Honey can be used internally and externally, as it contains natural antibiotics which help kill a multitude of nasty invaders to and on our bodies. It can help with everyting from burns to weak bones! Internally, the list is a long one, so I’ll just name a few. It helps with building the immune system, helps with allergies and hay fever, aids obesity, increases calcium absorption, helps arthritic joints when combned with apple cider vinegar. Great for your hair, internally and externally.

Drs are even starting to see the benifits of the power of RAW honey. Dr Cass Igram, DO, in The Survivor’s Nutritional Pharmacy so writes that in a fascinating modern development, scientists and doctors are beginning to rediscover the effectiveness of honey as a wound treatment. In recent years, honey has been used effectively in clinical settings for the treatment of fist-sized ulcers extending to the bone, as well as first, second, and third degree burns. Complete healing has been reported without the need for skin grafts and with no infections or muscle loss. I have many other reports I can site, but I will let you do your own research if you’re so inclined form here.

I just hope you’ll at least realize there is a different side to honey than its just “a waste product made from bees”. That may be the case, but this waste product is actualy very good for you. Also, there is a difference in the types of honey out there. The type you get in the grocery store thats all nice and clear, it has usually been filtered and/or heated, so you get that nice see-thru amber look. It most likely will say raw on it or 100% natural and it is, there is however some question on how much of the benificials are lost in the processes. A real RAW honey is a creamy tan texture normally with particles in it, kinda like peanut butter in texture, only lighter in color. It’s all the particles that have the most antibiotics that are benificial to us. Also, each type of honey has a different flavor, ie: clove, wildflower, orange blossom, etc. The best honey a person can get is from a LOCAL bee keeper, really important for people suffering allergies. Not only are you supporting a local person, but most important, the honey is from YOUR area. That means your flowers, your air, your temps, etc… and it really makes a difference IN your body.

Believe it or not, I’m not a bee keeper! As a hobby, I make 100% all natural herbal soaps, herbal teas, salves, tinctures, lip balms and such. Honey is one of my main ingredients in most of my products, so I’ve done extensive research on the subject, and not just on honey, but with all my ingredients. Decided when I first started my “hobby”, if it wasn’t something I wouldn’t be proud to put IN MY BODY, I would not use it. My family and growing customers seem to agree. I hope this might change your mind on honey. If nothing else, maybe get you to look at it from a different perspective.

        Bee Happy!

        • Mellissa

I actually use honey, it was just a reference to how it is made. Bad grammar. I also use penicillin if sick, I just do not think much of aspartame. The effect is not worth it, and the health concerns are large. Flame retardant is mind boggling. For a flavor, its just not logical there is so much that could be used instead that is not toxic.

I actually think we need to pay more attention to the bee’s decline and how to fix it. They used to be very common in gardens to help with fertilizing all the plants. Then the honey and wax and other products to. Now its rare and the environment suffers.

        • Idiot Proof

Honey is NOT a waste product of bees, how con you people be so misinformed on topics that are such common knowledge and so easily looked up?

      • Idiot Proof

Honey is NOT nor has it anything to do with ‘bee excrement”, honey is processed in the bee’s mouths, not a product of it’s digestive system, but a process to preserve ad store the bee’s primary food and energy source, nectar.

        From wikipedia:
Honey (pron.: /ˈhʌni/) is a sweet food made by bees using nectar from flowers. The variety produced by honey bees (the genus Apis) is the one most commonly referenced, as it is the type of honey collected by beekeepers and consumed by humans. Honey produced by other bees and insects has distinctly different properties.

Honey bees transform nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation and evaporation. They store it as a primary food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive.

I quit drinking soda about 7 years ago just because of the HFCS it contained and the fack that it could eat a 8 oz T-bone steak quicker than i can. That led me to checking labels at the store for MSG, HFCS and other poisons in food and drink so that now i grow my own vegtables and buy my own fruits to make juices and my favorite is homemade tomato juice..ummm umm, make yer tongue slap your eyebrows i tell ya.

      Great article, thank you!

Bromide is a poison. Brominated vegetable oil is bad so too is brominated wheat flour.

Even if sodas didn’t have unhealthy substances in them, they still have almost zero nutritional value.

    • Betsy.B.Scott

Unless you have access to “unadulterated” water, air, and food you’re gonna get some of that poison or it’s byproducts. However I do believe one can limit exposure.
