Hydrogen Peroxide and Witch Hazel: Two Great Liquids to Pack for Camping

Hydrogen peroxide and witch hazel are two liquids that belong in every basic first aid and emergency kit. Find each at your local drug store and pack both when going camping. They work as emergency medical supplies among their many other uses.

Hydrogen Peroxide

This weak acid features antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Found naturally in rainwater and snow, use it for any number of things while exploring the wilderness. Hydrogen peroxide will instantly clean and disinfect any cuts and scrapes, which is especially important while camping to avoid infection. Use it to remove stains from clothes–let it sit on the stain for awhile, then rinse with soap and water if possible. Had a run-in with a skunk? Hydrogen peroxide is fantastic for getting rid of dreaded skunk odor. Mix it with equal parts baking soda and water and allow skunk-fied clothes to soak. Wash as usual for odor-free clothing.

Other uses for hydrogen peroxide include mixing it with water to create a mouth rinse and for treatment of mouth infections. It also helps clear up insect bites and pimples, and works as a disinfectant for toothbrushes and any cutting boards, containers and scrub brushes you have with you.

Witch Hazel

A clear liquid like hydrogen peroxide, witch hazel is another excellent item to pack in a survival kit as it kills nasty bacteria and reduces all kinds of swelling. A fabulous astringent, use it to clean skin and for healing unsightly, painful bruises. If you’ve brushed against poison oak or ivy while camping, you’ll definitely want witch hazel with you to reduce the swelling and itching. Witch hazel is frequently referred to as “nature’s version of Neosporin.”

Sunburns are another common problem while camping. Witch hazel provides much-needed relief. Dealing with acne or bug bites while in the wilderness? The liquid will help solve those issues too. If you’ve gone overboard with your partying while camping, apply witch hazel to under-eye bags. It will also deflate that annoying puffiness.

Both of these liquids may be applied externally with cotton balls, cotton swabs and clean rags. You can also pour each directly onto affected areas. Besides having many practical uses, they are also super cheap. Most bottles are $2 or less!
