Survival Scenario – Lost in the Snow

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a survival scenario and since it’s winter and we just got a foot of snow I thought I’d throw one out there.

Scenario:

You’re hiking with a young person – son, daughter, nephew, niece, a friend’s child, or whoever.  You’ve been hiking/snowshoeing for a couple of hours when you realize you’ve taken a wrong turn in the fresh fallen snow (very easy to do) and you’re not sure where you are.

You stop to assess the situation.  You’ve got a light pack with a steel quart water bottle, a knife, lighter, small flashlight, one of those heavy duty survival blankets – the kind that’s reflective on one side and like a tarp on the other, and an energy bar.   You didn’t think it would be that big a deal, so you were traveling light.  Your cell phone is not picking up any bars, so you can’t call out.

You have an hour until it gets dark and you think you might know how to get out of the woods, but you’re not positive.  You and your young traveling companion are both dressed for the weather, but you’ve been sweating a little from exertion.

Do you go for it and lose whatever light you have on the notion you might get out, or do you decide to use that time to build a shelter and hunker down?
