Check out this video.  It details the story behind a shooting at a San Jose power sub-station

I’m sure many of you have seen this story by now. At first you might think it was just a couple of rednecks who got drunk and went down and shot up a power station. But when you look a little closer you see that they cut the phone cables first and then opened fire. When the police showed up – poof! – they were gone.  Pretty sophisticated stuff for a drunk redneck.

This opens up some interesting questions about domestic terrorism.

First, who would want to do this?  What’s in for them?  Do you suppose there’s a cell of Taliban secretly operating in California?  Or is it maybe it really was just a bunch of drunk rednecks carrying a grudge with the local power company?  Or maybe it’s just somebody who gets off on causing damage – kind of like the guy who starts a forest fire on purpose.

Here’s an interesting quote:  ”It seemed like a professional job.”

I haven’t heard of something like this happening since then, so it’s not like it’s happening all the time.  However, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen again.  Maybe this was just a first attempt to feel out how hard it would be.

Or maybe a copy cat is out there planning their own attack.  Who knows?

My next question is just how open are the various sub-stations and important infrastructure?  Gas pipelines, water, oil, etc.  These are all delivered via pipelines that are open to various groups who might have a bone to pick with the government.

The answer is obvious of course:  we’re very open to attack.  Earth First might be a group that would do something like this for example.  I’m not pointing fingers in this instance, but I am trying to make the point that there are “radical” groups within our own country that is capable of something like this.

I won’t get into the ideological reasons they do the things they do, suffice it to say they exist.

In the end it would be difficult to properly guard every structure and station that needs it.  Hopefully this little matter will just fade away and that will be that, but in the meantime it’s just another reason for me to keep prepping.  If they knocked out a few key power stations up here it’s unlikely we’d be without power for an extended time; however, don’t you think it would pay to have at least a few days food and water on hand?
