Does Your Breakfast Cereal Contain Toxic Weed-Killer Glyphosate?

Your children’s or grandchildren’s breakfast cereal might contain the potentially cancer-causing weed-killer glyphosate. Researchers have detected glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, in both Cheerios and Quaker Oats.

“Glyphosate: a herbicide linked to cancer by California state scientists and the World Health Organization, was found in all but two of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats,” the Environmental Working Group (EWG) announced. They continued, “Almost three-fourths of those samples had glyphosate levels higher than what EWG scientists consider protective of children’s health with an adequate margin of safety.”

USA Today has reported that Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, Cheerios, and Quaker Dinosaur Eggs all contain glyphosate. Furthermore, Quaker Oats contained the highest levels of glyphosate out of the bunch.

Glyphosate Might Cause Cancer And It Is In Your Children’s Cereal

Dewayne Johnson contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from glyphosate exposure, a California jury found. Johnson used large amounts of Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides as a school groundskeeper.

The jury ordered Roundup manufacturer Monsanto to pay Johnson $289 million, The Guardian reported. Jurors found that Monsanto hid evidence which confirmed that glyphosate caused cancer.

The European Union and the state of California have placed strict limits on glyphosate use. In fact, California state scientists have labeled glyphosate as a carcinogen, which is a cancer-causing chemical.

Carcinogen Glyphosate: It’s What’s For Breakfast

The EWG detected glyphosate in 43 of 45 products that it sampled. It found the carcinogen in cereals, granola bars, and granola.

Foods that contained glyphosate included: Lucky Charms, Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oil Cereal, Kellogg’s Cracklin Oat Bran, Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars, Kellogg’s Nutrigrain, Soft Baked Breakfast Bars, Quaker Steel-Cut Oats, Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats, Nature’s Path Organic Old-Fashioned Oats, Whole Foods Bulk Bin conventional Rolled Oats, Bob’s Red Mill Steel-Cut Oats, KIND Vanilla Blueberry Clusters with Flax Seeds, Nature Valley Granola Protein Oats and Peanuts, Quaker Dinosaur Eggs, Great Value (Walmart) Original Instant Oatmeal Umpqua Oats (Maple Pecan), and Market Pantry Instant Oatmeal (Strawberries).

Disturbingly, the EWG only tested a small portion of the products on the market. Many more foods may contain glyphosate as well.

Glyphosate is just below smoking on the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) scale of cancer risks. Many researchers have disputed the IARC’s findings, Business Insider also noted.

Moreover, glyphosate is an endocrine disruptor, and this means that it interferes with hormones. However, scientists are not sure how glyphosate causes cancer.

How To Protect Your Family From Glyphosate

Keeping glyphosate off your breakfast table is difficult because it is the world’s most popular weed killer.

Glyphosate is the most used weed killer ever. American farmers have poured 1.8 million tons of glyphosate on their fields since 1974, as a 2016 study found.

Farmers worldwide have used 9.4 million tons of glyphosate since 1974. That is enough herbicide to fill 2,300 Olympic-sized swimming pools, Newsweek concluded.

Therefore, the best way to protect your family from glyphosate is to serve eggs from your own chickens for breakfast. Our grandparents were probably right, bacon and eggs is a healthier breakfast choice than cereal.
