Emergency Management for the Average Joe

When you hear “emergency management” it generally makes you think of businesses or companies and complicated planning right?

Well, we’ve seen that the average “Joe” or everyday person, does think this way.

Let’s stop for a second and ponder what it means and we’ll see if that changes your opinion.

Emergency management is more or less having a plan in place for yourself, your company, your family, etc in the case of something happening…AKA an emergency.

Wow, so really it’s not really some complicated thing that only a business, school, workplace can do.

YOU can have an emergency plan set in place for yourself or your family, which means, you can be prepared for the worst.

There are really just a few basic steps that you need to take in order to create your own plan and today is your lucky day because we are going to guide you through each one!

Let’s pause one second…to make it sound a little less business like, let’s call it a family disaster plan for now.
It seems to sound a little more relatable.

***The first thing to do when creating your family disaster plan is to make a plan.
I know that sounds like a given, but there are a few fundamental concepts you should cover when making your plans.

1. Have a family meeting:

During this meeting you’ll be discussing any potential disaster or emergency that could happen.

For each one of those scenarios, explain what should be done.

Give each person a responsibility that they would be in charge of in the case that something happens.

Don’t forget about your pets. Make sure that they fit into your plan so that you can ensure their safety.

2. Meeting places:

In case you get separated from each other, pick a location right outside the home in case of a small emergency.

Also, pick a location that is somewhere outside of your community in case you are unable to get to your home.

Do a drill with the family and practice meeting at those specified locations.

3. Evacuation:

In the event you need to evacuate the area, map out the routes you would take and the locations you would go to so that everyone can meet up in the safe space.

Practice this evacuation route and meet up twice a year to make sure that everything runs smoothly and it will also let you see if anything in your plan has changed.

4. Survival Gear:

Create your own survival kit or bug out bag.

This will make sure that you have your essential items you’ll need for survival such as food, water, first aid, etc.

Make sure that everyone in your family knows where this is located and that it is for emergency use only.

Lastly…

5. Have a point of contact:

You’ll want to have an out of town family member as your point of contact to let them know you’re safe.

Many times in emergency situations, local phone calls are hard to make, but long distance calls are easier to get through.

Important things to do:

Make sure you know how to operate your fire extinguisher and ensure that it works.

Make sure your smoke detector is operating correctly or install them if you don’t already have them.

Have a list of emergency phone numbers ready and posted so that if you need them you don’t have to go searching.

Get a hand crank or battery operated radio. – This will help you stay up to date on what is happening or alert you when it is safe to go out or return to your home.

We’ve gone through the fundamentals of creating an emergency management plan for yourself or your family.

The key is to actually make the plan and then practice, practice, practice.
Know your plan inside and out.

When an emergency does arise, it’s sometimes hard to think clearly, but if you know exactly what to do and where to go, like the back of your hand, you’ll be able to get through it much more calmly.
