We are going to guide you on a journey of the most imperative details of emergency management.

Read on and you’ll learn the basic definition, the types of disaster you could be preparing for, how to create a management plan, and more!

Remember, this could save your family one day, so I wouldn’t skim over this lightly.
Take your time, soak up the information, and educate yourself!

Let’s start with the basic definition!

Disaster Management

  • This can be defined as the formulating of plans to avoid, lessen, and/or recover in the situation of a disaster.

Put more simply – emergency management is having a plan set in place for all aspects of the disaster.

Not having a plan in place could lead to damage or loss of assets or people.

Now, you may be thinking…
…what disasters can I formulate a management plan for?

  • Natural Disasters

This is the first type that comes to mind.
Natural disasters can consist of tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and many others.

  • Sickness & Disease

Sudden contagious illnesses can affect worker’s health, directly affecting people’s ability to work and would therefore hurt the economy for example.

  • International Disasters

Or anything that could cause a breakdown of leadership and authority.
Terrorism could be placed in this category as well.

There is no way to know exactly what disaster there may be, but there is a way to be smart about the possibility.

What are the 4 basic phases of disaster management?

  • Prevention – Be informed!

During this phase, your goal is to minimize effects of a disaster or possibly prevent one from occurring.

Yes, we know this is not necessarily possible in all cases, but some things that you can do for example are educating the public, making sure structures are up to code, or even having a plan for if a disaster were to strike.

In this phase it is important to be informed and know what to do in the case of an emergency.

Preparedness is very similar to prevention but the main difference is having specific plans in place.

Plan out an evacuation route, have a family meet up spot, store survival foods and supplies, etc.

Have the materials necessary for you and your family in the case that an emergency were to take place.
Prepare!

  • Response – Disaster assistance!

Okay, the disaster occurred, now what?
Response is going to be the phase where action is taken to help those affected immediately.

You want to make sure that the critical problems are taken care of asap.

Examples of this would be relocating people, providing shelter and relief, providing food and water, and restoring of prominent communications, etc.

  • Recovery – Rebuild

Recovery is perhaps the most lengthy of steps.

This is all about fixing what was damaged, whether it be rebuilding structures, counseling, rebuilding the economic standing, etc.

When the crisis is dealt with, the aftermath needs to be recovered and this is the main goal of the recovery phase.

Don’t stop reading now! You’re about to learn how to create your own disaster plan for yourself and your family!

DIY Disaster Management

  • Have a family meeting:

During this meeting, it is imperative to discuss why you are creating the plan, what situations are most likely to occur in your area, and what responsibilities each person has in each scenario.

  • Decide on meeting spots:

Determine where you would meet outside your home for a minor emergency and also at an outside location if you weren’t able to make it home.

Make sure everyone knows how to get there.

  • Learn your evacuation route:

If you need to leave the area, have a specific route that everyone would take along with a place to go to so that everyone is aware.

  • Practice!

This is the most important!

Practice your plan, practice each scenario, and make sure every family member that is part of it, knows what to do in each situation like the back of your hand.

Not only will you have peace of mind that everyone is informed, but in the event that something happens, your family will go on autopilot and do what needs to be done.

More than likely, your workplace has a disaster preparedness plan.
As your employer to see this and learn what the steps are for this.

Schools, daycares, and pretty much any place of business you can think of do have a disaster plan.

Disaster management may seem like a scary topic, but in the grand scheme of things, it is so very important.

Not only will you be able to take preventative measures, but in that wild situation that something happens, you will know what to do and then will be able to rebuild and move forward with your everyday life.

So, let’s recap.

You’ve learned what emergency management is, a few different types of disasters, the 4 key phases of management, and how you can create a plan for your own family.

Wow.

Aren’t you glad you stuck with me?

You’re the person to be around in the case of something happening.

Now, go on and educate yourself and most importantly…practice!
