New Hampshire Conservatives and the Article V Convention
by NHTPC Staff

The New Hampshire Senate recently passed two resolutions — SCR 3 and SCR 4 — both calling for an Article V Convention. SCR 3 is sponsored by WolfPAC, an organization that can charitably be called left of center. It was founded by Cenk Uygur, of The Young Turks, who among other things, denies the Armenian Holocaust, and openly advocates a runaway Article V Convention, as he says in this interview with Harvard Professor Larry Lessig.

WolfPAC’s top lobbyist is Ryan Clayton, the organization’s executive director. When he testified in NH last year, he angrily denounced opponents of an Article V Convention as “conspiracy theorists” for their concerns of a “runaway convention”. Yet, its founder is on record supporting a runaway convention. While WolfPAC isn’t registered as a lobbyist organization in NH, Mr. Clayton certainly shows all the signs of being a lobbyist. He comes across as professional and polished when he makes his rounds in the NH statehouse, but shows his true colors as seen in this picture where he is making an obscene gesture at opponents of an Article V Convention at the Indiana State House a few years ago.

Larry Lessig, another supporter of SCR 3, is a left-wing Harvard Professor, a former advisor to President Obama, and openly advocates a rewrite of the U.S. Constitution. He is one of the key leaders in this modern day call for an Article V Convention. He is involved with the groups New Hampshire Rebellion, and Move to Amend. He denounces big money in politics yet started MayDay PAC and raised $12M. MayDay PAC spent close $2M supporting Jim Rubens’ bid for a U.S. Senate seat in 2014. So much for getting big money out of politics! Oh yes, Larry likes to mock Christianity Amazingly, only two Republicans out of 14 voted against HCR 3 in the New Hampshire Senate.

Here is a link to an excellent summary against SCR 3. Objections to NH SCR 3

The organization behind SCR 4 is The Convention of States Project.

This lobbyist group has the support of many conservatives, but few know the background of its founder Mark Meckler who testified at the Senate hearing a few months ago. Meckler is affiliated with an organization called Living Room Conversations which employs the Delphi Technique to promote its agenda. This group also enjoys the participation of Van Jones and JoAnne Blades of the Soros-funded MoveOn.org

Here is a link to a short video from Living Room Conversations with Meckler, Jones and Blades.

If you visit the organization’s website you will find a quote from Mark Meckler endorsing Living Room Conversations where he makes the claim that elites run Washington, D.C. and state capitals.

Here are the quotes from the Living Room Conversations web site:

Mark Meckler, co-founder of (2009 co-opted GOP) Tea Party Patriots ~ “I am enthusiastic champion for Living Room Conversations because over the last several years I’ve come to realize that the largest divide in this country is not between the citizens of one party or another, but between the citizens and the Ruling Elite in Washington, DC and the state capitols. Those in power want us to hate each other, neighbor against neighbor, city against city and state against state. They like conservatives to hate liberals, Democrats to hate Republicans and they want us hating each other over any issue where they can foment discord. They do this because it is profitable for them. While the majority of Americans say that Washington, DC and government in general are broken, the majority of those in office think things are working well because they gain money, power and prestige from the division they sow. The status quo does not serve the people of this country, and Living Room Conversations is a critical step in helping people to see that they have a lot in common with those they’ve been told by the politicians and the media that they should hate. Only by learning to respect each other, and work together in this way is real change possible.”

Here is a quote from Meckler’s colleague Van Jones from the same site:

Van Jones ~ “Living Room Conversations highlight substantial common ground around the need to reform our criminal justice system. We have a moral imperative to fix the broken system. Living Room Conversations are a powerful tool for empowering local communities and for overcoming partisan dysfunction as we tackle these challenges.”

And finally, bio for JoAnne Blades:

Joan Blades is a founding partner of Living Room Conversations, co-founder of MomsRising.org and MoveOn.org as well as co-author of The Custom-Fit Workplace: “Choose When, Where and How to Work and Boost the Bottom Line” and “The Motherhood Manifesto”. Trained as an attorney/mediator, 10 years as a software entrepreneur and always a nature lover, she is also an artist, mother and true believer in the power of citizens and our need to rebuild respectful civil discourse and embrace our core shared values.

Living Room Conversations partners with New Hampshire Listens, a facilitation group for the Carsey Institute, an NGO based at the University of NH which steers the agenda of NH’s unelected commissions. Together, these groups promote the concept of regionalism around the state. NH Listens trains the “facilitators” who help towns conduct Delphi sessions for public input on plans that never came from the public in the first place, but which seek to plan every aspect of our lives.

As reported a few months ago, Convention of States New Hampshire, whose lobbyists delight in trashing any and all who oppose their agenda, was caught in a lie back in February. In an email to its supporters in the state, a COS official accused NH Senator Kevin Avard of taking a bribe from The John Birch Society. When it was exposed, a tepid apology was offered to the Senator, but it took another two months before an apology was made to The John Birch Society. Convention of States lobbyist Ken Quinn of Maine, who once denounced an opponent of an Article V Convention as an out-of-state operative who only opposed an Article V because he was paid to do so, comes across as a conservative who only wants to pass a few reasonable amendments that will restore our republic. But like his colleagues on the Left, Quinn claims that the U.S. Constitution is the problem, and like Convention of States leaders Michael Farris and Mark Meckler, calls for “structural change” of the U.S. Constitution. This is not exactly a position held by most conservatives.

We certainly hope that the New Hampshire House Republicans who call themselves conservatives see through these two well-funded lobbyist organizations, and reject any new calls for an Article V Convention. We ask that they repeal the one call that it already has.

Why are folks so against COS? I don’t understand this. And how can you be a constitutional patriot and BE against COS? Why can’t we sit down and have a National discussion about this? Why are folks so angry? Learn more, people: http://www.conventionofstates.com/

WolfPAC and the Convention of States Project are two completely different initiatives. I won’t comment on WolfPAC, but I can tell you with certainty, New Hampshire and the rest of the states *need* the Convention of States Project to be successful.

The COS Project advocates Constitutional amendments (because that’s the only way you can force change at the federal level) in the areas of spending reform, taxing reform and regulatory reform.

Anyone who argues against the COS Project is saying these topics shouldn’t even be discussed in a way that could bring actionable results.

“But like his colleagues on the Left, Quinn claims that the U.S. Constitution is the problem, and like Convention of States leaders Michael Farris and Mark Meckler, calls for “structural change” of the U.S. Constitution.” Are you sure this is Meckler’s position? I’m not finding not in my research.

NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN GOOD MEN & WOMEN DO NOTHING!!! What’s good about an Article V convention? A dialog of proposal’s limiting government formed BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, and approved BY WE THE PEOPLE. Each state can set the rules for delegates and amendments. Its the only voice we have… our members of Congress are not listening to us now and are sure not going to limit themselves or their terms, so let’s call a convention and they will have to hear us!!! Lets do this!!! Visit here to sign the petition, watch video’s and learn, and sign up to volunteer: http://www.cosaction.com/?recruiter_id=1351201

An Article V Convention of States sponsored by the Convention of States a Project by Citizens for Self Governance is our best chance and possibly our last chance to reign in our runaway and out-of-control federal government. Read your states Article-V COS resolution to learn the facts about how limited it is. Its only purpose is to use the Constitution to save the Constitution and bring back power to the people and states where it belongs.

Lessig and Soros are part of a complete;ly separate movement that’s out there trying to drum up support among Democrats and American Socialists for an amendments convention to make Big Government proposals that would EXPAND the power and jurisdiction of an already over-reaching federal government. They are a completely different group with a completely different agenda. This author really should inform himself.

The simple truth of the matter is that Soros and Lessig are free to read from the same Constitution as do Michael Ferris and Mark Meckler… the protections provided by our Constitution apply to all Americans, not just conservative ones. Lessig, Ferris and Meckler all might coincidentally stay in the same hotel some night, completely unknown to each other, or they might all eat at the same restaurant, or even go out and vote on the very same day… that doesn’t mean that they all slept together, or that they all ate at the same table, or that they all voted for the same candidates or issues. So, extending that line of thought out to its logical conclusion, we should never conflate two separate and distinct efforts to call for an Article V Convention of States, neither intentionally nor due to sloppy research.

I won’t provide a link to the Leftists, but here’s a link to the strictly-conservative, smaller-government, return-power-to-the-states Convention of States Project being spearheaded by Mark Meckler, Michael Ferris and the Citizens for Self-Governance. It’s a solution as big as the problem: http:www.ConventionOfStates.com

This article is disingenuous. The convention of states project is the best way to reign in the abuses of the federal government using the constitution the founders gave us.

There is just one Article-V of the Constitution. But, obviously, it can be utilized by any number of groups for any number of purposes. Don’t confuse WolfPac’s cause and bills supporting it with those of conventionofstates.org . Get some facts!

The Founders unanimously provided Article V option for the states to balance the federal government’s overreach. More than 400 such state applications have been filed over the years including the first couple that led to the bill of rights. As with all amendments to the constitution 38 states (both houses) are required for ratification. This is an enormously protective requirement that has only been reached 27 or so times.

The COS Project application has already been passed by 6 states and 20 or more state houses. This application is limited to 3 areas:

      (a) Impose fiscal restraints on the Federal Government.
      (b) Limit the power and jurisdiction of the Federal Government.
      (c) Limit the terms of office for federal officials and members of Congress.

Ok, so all you have is a slight association to supposedly come up with this idea that Convention of States Project is funded by Soros. I can verify that the one to overturn Citizens United is INDEED funded by Soros, but have found ZERO ties between Soros and Convention of States. (And I have LOADS of data on all sorts of Left wing and RINO groups too, so I’m not some uninformed guy.)

Also, why would George Soros want an Article V convention that could overturn his open borders, runaway “civil rights”, bloated federal government agenda? That makes no sense. George Soros has a goal of DESTROYING America. Why would he back something that could help change course and save it? That seems an idiotic move on his part.

Also, Living Room Conversations appears, at least on the surface, to be neutral in the political discussion. It appears to take views from both sides.

As for structural change, one of our ideas is term limits. We had those imposed, by Congress, in the Presidency in a Constitutional Amendment. Congress isn’t that likely to term limit itself. We tried term limits without a Constitutional Amendment but the SCOTUS struck it down, saying the states cannot impose term limits (each state alone cannot) on the Congress. Hence, our only route to do that is a structural change, via an Article V state convention. There goes your argument that no structural change is necessary.

Also, if our Founders didn’t think there was a need for structural change from time to time, why did they put Article V (either for Congress or for an Article V state convention) in there in the first place?

The following Statement is ignorant: “We certainly hope that the New Hampshire House Republicans who call themselves conservatives see through these two well-funded lobbyist organizations, and reject any new calls for an Article V Convention. We ask that they repeal the one call that it already has.” Please educate yourselves! It’s obvious that the federal government is out of control. Spending, regulations, taxes, and $20T deficit ($200T+ unfunded Liabilities), the “leadership” in our federal government has shown that they only care about their own power. The constitutional abuses are endless and the corruption absolute. Congress can’t get things under control. Article V is the only permanent solution . “…or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution…” http://www.conventionofstates….

Citizens concerned for the future of their country, under a federal government that’s increasingly bloated, corrupt, reckless and invasive, have a constitutional option. We can call a Convention of States to return the country to its original vision of a limited federal government that is of, by and for the people. Help restore Liberty http://www.cosaction.com/?recruiter_id=10565s85

The most comprehensive approach to using the power of Article V is the conventionofstates.com approach. It calls for recommending Amendments designed to reign in the bloated, Tyrannical Federal government and re-establish the balance of power envisioned by the Founders. Several amendments will be needed to do this.

An Article V Convention of States is the US Constitution’s best answer/solution to reigning in US Government tyranny.

    • mmowry

It is not amazing that only 2 out of 14 Republican Senators voted against the resolutions. The majority undoubtedly understood just as the founding fathers did when they wrote the state process into article V that there would come a time when all three branches of the federal government would co-opt the freedoms promised in the original Constitution. Live free or die, indeed. Fortunately our founders gave us a process where we can take back our freedoms without violence. Here is a link that discusses the reasoning of the founding fathers of the need for an article V convention of the states. They foresaw a point in time that the branches of the federal government would collude together in making the power of the federal government overbearing onto the states and the people. At this time it is obvious congress, the executive, and the courts are all three working together to install supreme power in the federal government. With many court cases such as Heller and Citizens United boiling down to 5-4 decisions on basic rights in the fill of rights we are only one liberal Justice away from the court amending the constitution on a 5-4 vote. Once a court makes a decision it would take a generation if at all for the court to be changed such to have a different philosophy and even then they have to deal with the settled law issue. With an activist court we will need to fortify the current rights with amendments that the court can’t distort the constitution into something even more perverse to the original intent of the founders. Here is the link discussing some of the original thoughts of some of the founders on the need for the article V process for the states to be able to prevent a federal government takeover of the Republic.: http://www.newswithviews.com/Timothy/baldwin211.htm

Article V Convention of States is the ONLY solution that is as big as the problem. Our Federal Government is so far out of control.. The only thing that comes out of Washington is spin and lies. We need to take this country back to the ideas that the Founders had in mind for this great country of ours.

Our Current situation is precisely what the Founders feared. They knew the Federal Government might one day become drunk with power, so they gave us a solution in Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Article V says that upon successful application by 34 states, the states can convene a Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments. Under the Convention of States Project Resolution, these amendments would be limited to:
      1. Imposing fiscal restraints on the Federal Government
      2. Limiting the Power of the Federal Government
      3. Imposing and mandating term limits
This would allow proposed amendments that limit executive orders, federal spending and taxation, and terms of office for Congress and the Supreme Court. These amendments only become part of the Constitution after they are ratified by 38 states, rendering the runaway convention objection virtually impossible. When 38 states agree on something, it’s not a runaway,,,, it’s a mandate!!

The Convention of States Project has a very well organized strategy and is recruiting and mobilizing American Citizens in 3000 state house and legislative districts across the country. The movement is spreading. Please join the thousands of Americans who are joining the Convention of States Project as endorsers, supporters, and volunteers. The time to act is NOW!!! Visit the website, sign our petition and tell your legislators you support this last, best chance to restore liberty in America.. http://www.cosaction.com/?recruiter_id=1862102
