Colorado discourages gunowners and defenders of liberty
To put it another way: Colorado Democrats wage war on peaceable gun owners
With, we point out, the assistance of Republicans and so-called independents. Wasn’t it just yesterday that Colorado leftists wanted to “defund the police” in Colorado? Courtesy of Black Lives Matter and LandBack and Occupy Everything? Now the statists in the legislature want to create a new special unit within the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Why? Mostly to target gun owners over paperwork and technical violations (or alleged violations) of arbitrary laws. ALL gun owners: not just criminals.
Colorado’s governor and most legislators want to ramp up the war on gunowners. And liberty.
Part of this Colorado Senate Bill 3 might make sense, maybe to minarchists. Not to lovers of liberty. It tells the CBI to investigate “egregious attempts to purchase firearms by previously convicted felons who are identified through the Instacheck unit denial process.” Given that CBI actually runs the Colorado Instacheck system, maybe CBI should be investigating attempted illegitimate purchases. In a police state, at least. But the larger “problem” is criminals buying guns on the black market. And as we know these various background check systems catch people who didn’t know they couldn’t buy a gun, not people with serious criminal intent. The real criminals know how to work around the nonsense. And do. Denver and much of Colorado are awash in criminals with weapons.
It seems that the real aim of the bill is to usurp local control of sheriffs and police forces and create a “statewide police force,” as one senator called it. Not to combat violent crime, not to deal with nasty people who go around attacking, beating, and even killing others. No! This CBI and gang’s job would be to enforce technical violations of gun laws.
The bill (as amended) gives CBI broad authority “to investigate throughout the state criminal activity involving firearms described in Article 12 of Title 18.” That is a very broad article encompassing all sorts of nasty stuff (sarcasm intended):
- “unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon,”
- “private firearms transfers,”
- “failure to report a lost or stolen firearm,”
- “secure firearm storage,”
- prohibition of “large-capacity magazines,” and
- more. All the stupid laws the Colorado General Assembly has passed to the huzzahs of hoplophobes and hoploclasts.
The bill requires CBI to communicate with local law enforcement. But not to coordinate with local law enforcement. They want the CBI to be “super-police” – a Colorado version of the arrogant and politically-driven FBI.
So Polis and his buddies in the General Assembly want to give the CBI vast new powers.
For example, the power to ring your doorbell if they get an anonymous tip that you’ve stored your guns incorrectly. Apparently, actually to “knock” on your door with a sledge hammer or a battering ram. Backed up by thugs with automatic weapons, grenades, and all armored up. And no doubt with “Child Protection” thugs standing behind them to seize your children because you have created a hostile and dangerous environment for them to grow up in.
Stupid is as stupid does
Do we not see that this bill is practically begging for politically and even racially motivated investigations? Just like the FBI? And BATFE? And the health nazi bureaucrats? Sure, it might not happen. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
Oh, and by the way, there is a sister bill the hoploclasts are pushing. Colorado statutes (CRS Title 18, Article 12) would be modified by House Bill House Bill 1348 which addresses storing a firearm in a vehicle. SB3 would give the CBI primary authority to enforce.
Colorado’s General Assembly (legislatures) constantly demonstrates its stupidity, but this one really takes the cake. The bill requires (with some exceptions) that guns stored in a vehicle be placed in a “locked hard-sided container” or with a trigger lock in a soft-sided container. Even in a locked trunk or bolted down tool box. These containers do not have to be attached to the car. So exactly why can’t they still be easily stolen? My oh my!
The bill states, “For the purposes of this subsection, . . . a glove compartment or the center console of a vehicle is not a locked hard-sided container.” Even if it locks. Even if it has hard sides. But according to this really stupid bill, a locked jockey box with hard sides is “not a locked hard-sided container.” Does this not smell like they just want to make life miserable for gunowners who dare to carry their weapons in their vehicles? And, and forget about traditional gunracks in pickup trucks – locks or not.
But we aren’t done, folks. HB 1348 ties in with Senate Bill 131. That, like many across the States, would prohibit the licensed concealed carry in various “sensitive spaces.” Parks, recreation facilities, any permitted assembly or special event (churches, anyone?), any medical facility, and so on. In other words, the goons want licensed concealed handguns carriers to frequently take the gun off (where it is at almost no risk of theft), and leave it in their vehicle (but not in a locked glove box!). No theft from cars in Colorado, right?
That is just a way to thumb their nose at the 2nd Amendment and freedom in general. It solves nothing. Indeed, it just assures that, a criminal who brings a gun into a “sensitive area,” will be less likely to confront someone able to stop him. As has happened multiple times in Colorado. So the statists in Colorado will do everything they can to work around the 2nd Amendment.
The only legitimate excuse for law enforcement is to protect the rights and safety of the State’s people. These bills instead divert scarce resources to the enforcement of technical and paperwork violations, and take away rights and safety. As should be obvious from history, giving that sort of awesome power to a state agency guarantees abuse. And supposedly never-Trumpers fear The Donald as president could use the power of the federal government to harass his political enemies?
