Major Raid Against Calabrian Mafia
In southern Italy more than 300 suspected members of the ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia — a criminal network involving 155 families — have been arrested as reported by BBC News: ” Analysts say the group has expanded out of its Calabrian heartland to play a major role in organised crime throughout Europe, and in the international drugs trade from South America.” The charges “range from belonging to an organised crime group to murder, extortion and offences linked with the awarding of public works contracts,” and “millions of dollars worth of property has also been seized” as reported by the Daily Mail. Among ”those arrested during the pre-dawn operation was 80-year-old Domenico Oppedisano, purportedly ‘boss of bosses’ of the ‘Ndrangheta” as reported by Steve Scherer for Bloomberg. News on the arrest of Oppedisano “brought lawmakers to their feet, cheering, in Italy’s senate” as reported by Maria DeCristofaro and Henry Chu for The Los Angeles Times.
