Are you usually in charge of organizing your office or family holiday party? Obviously, things are very different this year, but that’s not a reason to cancel. It’s time to be creative. You can have virtual holiday parties using platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, Houseparty & Webex. We’ve come up with a list to help you out.

Virtual Holiday Party Ideas

  • Virtual Theme Parties
For companies, Teambuilding.com has a variety of options for virtual parties, from Holiday Trivia & Ugly Sweater competitions to Holiday Bingo, Gingerbread Wars, or a Scavenger Hunt. Each package comes with an online host to make sure everyone stays engaged. Most events last 90 minutes although you can customize. The package includes a video as a fun memento to share with the group. These events give remote employees the chance to relax and reconnect with coworkers.

If it isn’t in the budget to do something formal, during a staff meeting invite everyone to decorate their remote desk area. Award a gift card for the most festive decorations.

  • Virtual Karaoke
Grab an adult beverage and set up an online karaoke session for friends, coworkers, or family. Set up an online party at Voicebox.com. Reserve your party date and time online. Voicebox will email you a customized invitation that you can forward. Everyone will need to have Zoom downloaded. Have your phone nearby with vbsongs.com opened in a browser window. You’ll be using your smartphone as a remote for browsing and adding songs to your party in real-time! They are currently running a promo where 2 hours costs just $10.
  • Christmas Cookie or Gingerbread Competition
Have everyone show off their favorite Christmas cookie recipes and share them online. For families with kids (or even adults who enjoy the tradition,) pre-make sugar cookies and decorate them while everyone is online together. This is an opportunity to show off your creativity while talking and reminiscing. Luna Ellis of Arlos Cookies is offering a virtual holiday cookie workshop to get your group in the holiday spirit. For live instruction, you can also book a private virtual cookie party. Another option is to have everyone purchase a gingerbread kit ahead of time and have a friendly and decorate online together.
  • Virtual Cocktail Parties
Share recipes for alcoholic drinks that warm you up. Have everyone purchase the same types of wine to have a virtual “Dreaming of a Wine Christmas” wine & cheese tasting. You can purchase boxes from Cheeky Cocktails or make a list of ingredients everyone will need. Use your theme to set festive Zoom backgrounds. Think falling snow, scenes from your favorite Christmas movie, or the North Pole. Consider playing online games while everyone is drinking or make it an Ugly Sweater Party as well.

If you don’t mind spending some money, there are some great options out there. City Brews Tours can set up a virtual beer & cheese tasting experience or a Live Homebrew Experience. Brands like Supper Share make it easy to host your own virtual tasting, connecting you with sommelier hosts from around the country. CorkBuzz was voted Best Virtual Wine Tasting by Food & Wine Magazine. Sourced Craft Cocktails will deliver mini cocktail kits to everyone and host a cocktail making demonstration with a mixologist. At LayLowap.com you can set up a private tasting that lasts about an hour and you learn to make 4 new cocktails. You can purchase what you need on your own or they will ship the ingredients to you if you’d like. You can also join a class for just $10 but book ahead of time as they are often sold out. Equalpartsco.com will host a 90 minute cocktail hour sharing recipes & techniques. You can go with classic cocktails or go for Christmas Theme drinks. Try your hand at holiday cocktails with a virtual class from Liquid Lab. They offer seasonal classes including Holiday Champagne Cocktails & Happy Hoiday Cocktails as well as Private Mixology Classes. There are several other companies that offer Tequila, Bourbon, or Whiskey tastings.

  • Game Night
Charades is always an easy game for everyone to participate in. Holiday Bingo is another easy one. You can find plenty of game cards online. Chubby Elf takes a little pre-planning but always gets plenty of laughs. People take turns with mouthfuls of marshmallow, candy, or cookies and attempt to sing a Christmas carol. See who can guess first.

GeoGuessr is a fun game time play while having cocktails. It shows pictures of places around the click to guess where in the world it is. Another app everyone could download is Skribbl (which is like Pictionary) so you can draw and hope other guests can guess what it is. Scavify is an app that offers scavenger hunts with auto-scoring, a photostream, and a leaderboard. Play an online Escape Room together. There are several sites such as theescapegame.com Log onto Zoom (or your preferred video conference service) with your team. Our TEG host will join to get you started and help throughout the game. Your guide’s already in the room with a live camera feed. Work with your team to direct your guide through the adventure. Pick up clues in your digital dashboard to solve puzzles and complete your mission in 60 minutes!

If you prefer someone to run the games for you, at TheGoGame.com, hosts will hold 45 to 60-minute games including Pictionary, Buzz in the Pub Trivia, Live Polling & Voting, and more. During the game, your Go Game host DJ’s music points out highlights and provides topical commentary.

As you can see there are plenty of options for your to still be able to connect with family, co-workers and friends over the holidays. It may take a little extra effort, but it will be well worth it.
