Cancun in August? Travel Requirements, Weather and More

Southern Mexico is quite hot in August – ideal for travelers who relish water-based activities – while cooler northern Mexico has plenty to offer in matters of culture and outdoor activities.

A trip to Cancun, however, is a wonderful vacation no matter what time of year you visit. No matter when you decide to come, there’s plenty to fill up your time with, and plenty to love about Cancun. From amenities, activities, restaurants at an all-inclusive resort, to casinos, shopping, attractions, and nightlife, there’s everything for everyone. Read on for more about activities, travel restrictions, and weather in Cancun.

Covid-19 Restrictions

Traveling anywhere during these uncertain times, be that on an international or domestic, is quite risky. With that in mind, if you feel safe enough traveling with the right precautions, Cancun is indeed one of the safest destinations to travel this 2021. But it’s not just us saying this. These claims come as a result of an impressive and inexorable effort that the local administration, businesses, and locals from Cancun have put into creating and following strict sanitary methods.

From the Mexican Caribbean Clean & Safe Certification, which almost 6,000 organizations have applied for, a program that certifies service providers that can maintain the uppermost sanitary measures for the deterrence and containment of the virus.

Even more, unlike other destinations where locals have opposed reopening, people from Cancun have continued to promote it. And they have all the reasons to do so.

Crowds & Costs

August in Cancun tends to be much more peaceful than June and July, with fewer international visitors and more national travelers.

If you want to spend your August on the Pacific Coast, you can find lovely deals on flights and accommodations. Cancun Airport Transportation is also quite convenient and cheap so you won’t regret a penny. Note that it can be extremely crowded when the school holidays begin in some schools and families visit the coast. Lazy beach days and attractions aren’t excluded either, but it doesn’t get nearly as crowded as in the winter season.

Weather

August in Cancun starts off oppressively humid and hot for the first several weeks and begins to cool down as the month goes on. In the north, the weather is hotter and drier. Most often August is the hurricane season in Cancun, however, not everyone is as “lucky” to witness one. Cancun can be very hot and humid at that time.

If you plan to spend most of your time by the pool or on the beach, August might actually be quite pleasant but it’s always a good idea to keep track of the weather forecast. The normal temperatures are around 90-100 F, especially in the south.

However, if you plan to visit Cancun in August, we suggest you get travel insurance. The chances of being injured during a hurricane are quite small, taking into consideration the latest preventive measures, but it pays to have travel insurance.

What to Do and Where to Go

Water sports enthusiasts love Mexico, and for the right reasons. It’s an ideal time to relish water-based activities like snorkeling, diving, swimming, diving with sharks – especially in the south. It’s a perfect combination of culture, water fun, and exploration that suits everyone regardless of their age.

August in Cancun is also a great time to join traditional and cultural events like the Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi y de la Charrería Guadalajara.

If you’re an experience seeker, Cancun is a great place for snorkeling where you can experience enticing underwater nature close-ups.  July through August promises a nearly 100% chance of swimming with whale sharks, mostly in pods. Before you go, be sure you abide by all conservation policies and rules though.
