McDonald's Outrageous Employee 'Holiday Advice' Hits Children Hardest

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

McDonald’s financial tips to its employees for getting through the holiday, such as selling possessions on eBay and Craigslist, has outraged some mothers across the nation. They say low minimum wages is most injurious to females – mothers in particular, and that means America’s children.

“Disturbed. That’s how I felt after seeing the latest holiday news coming out of some of our country’s biggest businesses,” says Elyssa Koldin Schmier along with a team heading the non-profit group Mom’s Rising in a written statement this week.

ABC News reports McDonald’s holiday advice to its employees - “financial tips” like, “Selling some of your unwanted possessions on eBay or Craigslist could bring in some quick cash.”

The U.S.-based mega-company also advised, “Sing away stress: singing along to your favorite songs can lower your blood pressure.”

Mothers and children deserve better, according to Mom’s Rising, who wants the public to know just how tragic the situation is.

“Working parents need more than advice to sing their favorite songs in order to relieve financial stress. We need to raise the minimum wage,” says Koldin Schmier. “Right now, $14,500 is what is earned while working full-time year round at federal minimum wage.”

As widely reported by media, a Walmart in Ohio is “holding a food drive—for its own employees. That helped prompt a Walmart employee walk-out this Black Thursday. (and a subsequent resignation by one of the company’s leaders.)

“I usually have Thanksgiving Day with my children,” a local Wal-Mart employee told this author Tuesday. “This year, I’ll be here working all day.”

Poverty Stricken Americans’ Lives Cut Twenty Years

American voices advocating for low-wage moms are being heard. A Walmart head executive resigned this week following the declared Walmart walk-out for higher salaries.

Perhaps Vermont’s Senator Bernie Sanders’ voice is being better heard, too.

“Poverty is not simply the kind of car a person drives or the house he or she lives in,” stated Sanders, convener of this week’s Senate hearing on American poverty and wage disparity.

“[Poverty] is a daily stress which robs people of years of their lives, concluded Sanders. “In many ways, the stress of poverty is a death sentence.”

As income and wealth disparity increase in the United States, so does the differences in life expectancy between the haves and the have-nots – as much as a twnety year difference, according to The Nation, that covered the recent Senate hearing.

Mom’s Rising is giving advice other than singing to help employees get through the holiday season and beyond:

“Tell your Members of Congress to raise the minimum wage: http://action.momsrising.org/go/3838?t=4&akid=4882.1901216.i7TIcC.”

As people rush through malls and restaurants, Mom’s Rising wants those same people to ensure that the 30 million low-wage American workers are able to earn more than just demeaning advice.

Since the “recession”, 58% of new jobs have been in low-wage occupations - cashiers and food preparation jobs where minimum wage sets pay scales. (See: National Employment Law Project. The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013

“And women are getting hit the hardest,” says Mom’s Rising. “Women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers. A woman working full-time, year round at minimum wage will earn $14,500 annually—nearly $4,000 below the poverty line for a mother with two children.” (See: Julie Vogtman and Katherine Gallagher Robbins. Fair Pay for Women Requires Increasing the Minimum Wage and Tipped Minimum Wage, National Women’s Law Center, Sept, 2013.)

The situation is particularly harsh for tipped minimum wage workers (like waitresses and bartenders) who haven’t seen a raise in over 20 years and are somehow still being paid $2.13/hour!”

Low-wage workers are older than most people might think.

“They are not only teenagers working the drive-thru window,” say the women activists. “In fact, 88% of workers who would be affected by raising the minimum wage are at least 20 years old, and a third of them are at least 40 years old.”

“No one working full-time should live in poverty. It’s time to raise the minimum wage,” the mothers assert.

The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 has been introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate for a vote in the coming weeks. This legislation will raise federal minimum wage to $10.10 by 2015 for over 30 million workers.

Fifty-six percent of workers who would have an increased wage would be women. Over 5 million workers affected by this legislation would be mothers.

Moms are working hard for this country,” says the group leaders. “Isn’t it time that our country works for moms!?”

For the sake of American mothers and their children, tell Congress to raise mimimum wage: http://action.momsrising.org/go/3838?t=6&akid=4882.1901216.i7TIcC

It is truly despicable what these corporations do. They need to be torn down, nobody should be buying and supporting such companies.

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you! Hope the boycott this Black Friday is as powerful as possible. Oops – guess that makes me a “financial terrorist” for thinking about interfering with corporate government’s bottom line.

        • iamamerican

I boycott every black friday sale, I refuse to be a sheeple herded into a big box store to buy cheap goods from China, instead I go shopping on small saturday and shop at hometown stores. I don’t eat McDonald’s fake food and never step foot in walmart.

    • Deborah Dupre

I’m thankful today for all the people of goodwill in this country, including Mom’s Rising, Sen. Bernie Sanders and my loyal readers who join them in demanding higher wages.

Do women EVER say anything good about fathers? Ever? The old ‘it’s all about us’ from women has grown exceeding wearisome and tiring. Every minute of every day, 365 days a year, decade after decade, it’s the same old crap. We get it. Now take a day off.

      • Sakeeta2013

You’re stupid if you think a father is nearly as important as a mother. You screw the woman, and then shes left with the pregnancy. Obviously, that alone makes the father pretty useless for 9 months. Then, after the baby is born, they need breast milk and loving care from their mother. They cling to their mother. Not the father. Why? Because its NATURE, the mother is important, the father is the one that either tries to kill the baby, or just leaves. Take a look at animals and you will understand.

I have no problem admitting how worthless men are. My boyfriend himself is pretty worthless, not capable of anything unless hes told all the shots. I’ve seen it with every single man I’ve ever met. Men are mindless idiots who always need to be told what to do, or they screw everything up!

If we had a woman as president for once, this country would actually have a glimmer of hope. Get the idiot man out, and things will get better. Even my boyfriend agrees with these statements. I’m glad he realizes hes stupid.

This is really just a sad commentary on your choice in men. Not throwing stones here, but your comment about the need for mothers over fathers is just false. Children need mothers and fathers equally. The almost feral activity you see in areas where children are being raised without fathers is without question. Working single mothers can’t be home to raise their kids.

The sad state of affairs today can be attributed to women giving their affection to overgrown kids. Our young men today put video games, sports, drinking, pornography, partying, etc. above the priorities of hard work, family, and parenting. Women who give these “worthless” men (as you call them) a place in their hearts, homes, and beds get what they deserve, and are equally to blame. The children that come into the world in these circumstances (in many cases out of wedlock) suffer as a result.

While the lack of responsibility on the man’s part is despicable, they are really only fueled by the overwhelming availability of women who are willing to tolerate them.

So now, we have to raise the minimum wage so that working single mothers can raise kids on their own. The real need is for men to wake up, put aside their selfish desires, and become the husbands and fathers that God meant for them to be.

      Just in from New Orleans:
      Black Friday Protest
      Noon Friday
      November 29th
      Walmart at 1901 Tchoupitoulas Street
On the sidewalk area in front of the store near the Rousseau Street entrance.

      And from Los Angeles ANSWER:
      MAIN ACTION @ 11:30AM: 4104 Crenshaw Blvd

Stand with Walmart workers around the country on Black Friday (Nov. 29th), the biggest shopping day of the year, as they stand up to Walmart and call for an end to retaliation against those who bravely speak out and a real wage of $25,000/yr.

If you cannot attend the main action at the Crenshaw Walmart, SEE ANSWER.COM to find an action near you!

Walmart already pays more than min.wage. Raise min.wage and the price of goods go up. The Waltons should close all walmarts immediately and live off of the billions they have. Then let everyone complaining about the pay open their own business and pay their employees what they think is fair.

        • Deborah Dupre

I’ve been impressed with the northeast’s store alternative to Walmart: Bi Mart. The company is owned and operated by the employees. The concept has expanded and now, Bi Mart has 74 stores in communities throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. It’s continuing to expand throughout the Northwest. It’s fair and people there love it. Why not???

What a joke. These “moms” collect MASSIVE $9,000 Average EIC Checks from the IRS every year, while the single person gets peanuts. Point blank, FK THEM. I’m sick seeing them get these massive checks when I get nothing. DONE WITH IT.

    • Bigbadcuda

Where is the story about the MASSIVE EIC checks these “poor” mothers get at the first of the year from the IRS?! With $10,000 being the average, the American people deserve to know the truth about this wealth redistribution that makes EBT look like chump change. Of course they get that too, along with medicaid, housing subsidies, utility subsidies, WIC, and all the other handouts for these “poor” moms. What a disgusting joke for the single taxpayer who gets to foot the Bill.

      • pigsdofly

I don’t know about your $10,000 quote but it in NOWAY compares to the amount middle income and or rich people obtain by being able to afford their own property. Most of these people pay RENT on other people’s property while the landlords rake in the wealth!!! How many middle income or rich people pay an avg $1.50 per wash load not including dryer load cost??? Again -the owner of the machines profits. While the renter continues to flush money down the drain. As far as the world owing you something~ many of these men have skipped out on being responsible in raising their children. The amount for CHILD support is pathetic!!! Have You not been to the grocery store these days???? You cannot buy and pick up anything off the shelf that is not at least close to $2 And, even if these mothers obtain child support and live in subsidized housing-generally 1/3 of the amount goes into paying HIGHER RENT. The BEST thing young women can do is STAY away from MEN!!! KEEP staring at your fake porn

    • Call It Like It Is...

ALL of the people complaining that they are only getting paid “Minimum Wage” need to stop whining about it because they chose to take the job in the first place…

Nobody is forcing them to work at these low paying job’s… Yes, many of these big companies do take advantage of low pay and no benefits, but these jobs were NOT designed to create wealthy employee’s and huge retirement accounts…

STOP complaining that the world owes you something when you have done nothing and go out and get a better education and better Job Skills… If you want to earn more than Minimum Wage do something about it yourself.

Many of the people who work these Minimum Wage Job’s are high school dropout’s, unwed single mother’s, drug addicts, high school students and disabled people.

The American Dream is available for anyone who wants to go to school and study hard, learn job skills that lead to better pay and “Work for their own good”…

Stop Complaining and Do Something Yourself….

      • Deborah Dupre

Dear Call It Like It Is, What a sad commentary you offer on how some people view those in poverty, trying to be responsible by accepting the only job they can get these days – one that pays minimum wage. Whatever happened to “There but for the grace og God…”? The American Dream? Did you really watch the video in this article?
Dying young due to a nation where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and to hell with human rights that are based on equality – is the dream of American fascism – and it is a dream coming true, partially because of sheeple with no compassion or sense of reality.

      • Anonamoos in the hoose

Perhaps Call it like it is could tell us why some have everything. While others must go without ? Sounds like Call it like it is ….is also a rich capitalist SCUM.

    • pigsdofly

I sincerely have a HUGE ISSUE with your complaints!! You think it’s perfectly fine to complain about your low-income jobs that you point out!!! But, how about your lowly paid nursing assistants who are over worked, understaffed, underpaid whom by their employer are required to work weekends and holidays. They don’t have the “option” to just close the doors or whine in public. Whining in public only gets them “that’s your choice!” trash!!! Even in a recession’depression they can’t get people to work in these facilities. THANK GOD! Some of You don’t~with the way you raise your children and not take care of homes!!! Yes, that plays a huge role in how you would take care of some one who was in need of assistance!!! Do you realize that there are more physical injury’s for LIFE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD compared to your ALL male construction works (male biased reporting). Even Social Security, knows the truth as well as the facts. I’m sorry and till all is equal for everyone, you get NO SYMPATHY from me!!!

    • Ingrid

If stead of simply running your mouths here, why don’t you organize a TOTAL boycott of this evil empire?
      Be useful,

      • Deborah Dupre

Igrid – Perhaps you coud share with readers how to go about doing what you suggest? Thank you for reading this and for your idea.

    • paul brown

Ingrid’s right. Instead of bickering, we can just stop eating at McDonald’s and other chain food establishments. Eat at local eateries or at home. Encourage others to do the same. It’s part of buying local instead of national chains. Employees are treated better by local businesses, there are at least as many jobs, quality is better, and the money is more likely to stay in the local community. This includes service companies like plumbers and repair companies, and contractors too.
Oh, and bank and invest locally too. Starve the oligarchs. Of course, it’s harder for goods that just aren’t made locally, but a lot of those goods aren’t really necessary either. Another good practice is to buy from organizations like ReStore and Goodwill, which have good prices, help recycle and repurpose goods, and support good causes.
Credo is a phone company that doesn’t use your money to support right wingnut causes.
The list of useful things that can be done goes on and on. A useful mindset: if an expenditure involves supporting large or out-of-town corporations, try to find a local alternative. Try to recycle, reuse, and repair things instead of buying new. And save your money for truly useful purposes like energy efficiency and solar power instead of consumer junk.
