How to Take Spiritual Inventory of Your Space

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship with our homes. I find it interesting how our personal environment often mirrors what is going on with our deeper self. It seems that when anxiety collects in the mind, it tends to manifest as a mess within the home. And just as we do with our anxiety, we try to ignore the clutter in our space. We compartmentalize it. But if we have this mirroring relationship with our home, can’t we use that to our benefit? Instead of allowing our internal chaos to reflect negatively on our environment, why not turn the cleansing of our home into a healing tool for the mind? I call this practice, taking spiritual inventory of your space.

What you’ll learn in this video:

  • Why you need to take spiritual inventory of your home
  • How to take spiritual inventory of the home
  • Steps to cleansing the space + spirit

3 Tips for Taking Spiritual Inventory of Your Home

1. Try Your Best to Remain Unattached

Taking spiritual inventory of your home is about going through your space, and recognizing what triggers anxiety for you when see it. Which spots derail your positivity when you encounter them? To do this, you have to walk through your space with the fresh eyes of an objective viewer. Keep an open mind. Try not to think of this as your home. Look at every spot that you tend to overlook when walking through your space.

2. Do a Bit of Self Reflection Work

Get a notebook and begin listing the different areas within your space. Write down how you feel when you spend time in these areas. Be your own therapist. This exercise allows you to focus on one area at a time so that when you do a walkthrough later, you can find what it is about the space that makes you feel a certain way.

For example: Since I don’t cook that often, my kitchen can be a total mess, and I still won’t have any negative feelings attached to it. But when my bedroom is a mess, that’s a different story. I keep my room very clean. My bedroom is my sanctuary. It’s about as minimalist as it can get. Elsewhere in my home, I have lots of art, crystals and trinkets from all my travels. But I prefer my bedroom to be sparse, so that my mind is cleansed of thoughts, and I can easily transition to an energy of rest and relaxation. That means that if I have a mess in my room, or a pile in my closet, it’s likely due to an internal disarray, and I am going to have a reaction to it. So when I’m I think about my space in this exercise, if I realize I’m not spending much time in my bedroom, it’s probably because there’s a mess looming in there.

3. It’s Spiritual Inventory Time!

Holding your notebook, walk outside your front door and close it behind you. Turning to face your door, take three deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Now, open your front door, enter and go to the left. Observe the space. Try to experience your space with all of your senses, including your intuitive sense as you ask yourself how this room makes you feel. If you need a bit more guidance, here’s four focus points:

What does the room look like?

Observe this space. Look at all the corners of the room. See what’s on the tables. Take a look at your artwork. If there are plants, are they living? Are they thriving? Or are they dying? Is the room dusty, are there piles of stuff everywhere? Look on the floor. Is the room easy to move around?

Now, what does the room feel like?

Does the room feel light and open, or dark and stale? Does it feel tense or stuffy?

What does the room smell like?

Does the room smell fresh? Does it smell moldy and wet? Does it smell stale? Does it smell welcoming?

Finally, how do you personally feel when you are in the room?

Did you tense up when you walked in? What does your body feel like? What does your mind feel like? Clear or cluttered? Overwhelmed or at ease? Does this space make you feel relaxed? Is there a certain item or area that triggers you within the room?

Continue moving throughout your entire space, noting what you observe. And then repeat this process with all the rooms or areas within your home. Take notes on anything that comes up. After you’ve finished, use your notes to create an action plan for yourself to shift your space to make it the ideal environment to thrive in.

With your action plan in hand, start making changes. Move things. Clean. Simplify – whatever you feel needs to be done to make your space better for you. And then cleanse the entire space. (If you’re not sure how to go about that, see page 31 in the Space Clearing chapter of my book, Crystal Muse: Everyday Rituals to Tune In to the Real You or click here). See if that thorough cleansing doesn’t have a mirroring effect on clutter in your mind.

Are you ready to start? If you’re feeling overwhelmed by just the thought of taking spiritual inventory of your space, start small. Start with just your entryway. Walk into your home and stop. What’s the first thing you see? How does it make you feel? This space is the first thing you see every time you enter your home so it sets the tone of how you feel. If you find you don’t love how it makes you feel, shift it! I guarantee you, that one change will make a huge, huge shift.
