5 Weird Tax Deductions You Never Thought Of

When tax season rolls around, many of us find ourselves getting pretty creative when it comes to finding deductions. Most know the basic write-offs, like business travel or computers and office supplies.

But, you’re probably overlooking quite a few others. Sure, not all write-offs apply to everyone, but, we’re willing to bet there are a few that most don’t know about.

That’s why we’re stepping in. Here are 5 weird tax deductions you probably aren’t aware of. Also, let’s hope that one or a few apply to your situation!

1. Pet Moving Expenses

It’s well-known that the IRS allows movers to write off many of their relocation expenses. However, some are just now catching wind that our four-legged friends also qualify as a “personal effect” that can be deducted.

All household goods and moveable personal properties (which pets qualify as), can be written off. Taxpayers should keep an accurate record of these expenses, as the IRS will want to see what was paid.

2. Swimming Pool

Backyard pools are commonly referred to as “money pits”, but during tax season, they may save you. That’s if you have a medical condition that can be improved through swim exercise.

The key to this is you have to be able to prove the pool is for a specific cause. Medical care expenses, i.e. pools and saunas, are not covered if they’re used for general health.

3. Quit Smoking

If you need another incentive to give up cigarettes, consider this your answer. The IRS allows taxpayers to deduct smoking cessation programs as a medical expense.

Keep in mind the IRS does not allow deductions for over-the-counter medications, such as nicotine patches and gum. You must be enrolled in a valid smoking program for your write-offs to be honored.

4. Home Landscaping

This one is for all the independent contractors and other work-from-home employees. We’re privy to the home office deductions, but did you know landscaping fees are also covered?

When filing an online tax return, don’t forget to include any kind of outdoor maintenance costs, such as driveway repair or lawn care. For you to qualify, you must regularly meet with clients at your personal property.

5. School Supplies

A lot of the time, teachers have to reach into their own pockets to provide for a classroom. The IRS allows educators to write off up to $250 for materials for students.

Even if the teacher doesn’t itemize their deductions, they still benefit from this clause. That’s because the $250 is instead subtracted from income.
