10 Weird Website Problems Caused by Lack of Maintenance

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Back in the day, people used to buy a domain and implement basic website design, then leave their site alone for months at a time. A web presence was considered to be good enough as long as you had something to offer.

Now, the internet is a much different space. You need to constantly work on your site if you want this business resource to be worth your while. Not to mention, lack of efforts in updating and maintaining a site can lead to a bunch of unnecessary website problems.

These are issues you can easily avoid if you just put in the work. If it’s been years since you’ve touched your site, though, expect to see some of the following problems.

1. Poor Ranking Performance

Modern-day websites are all focused on one thing: SEO. Or at least, they should be. This is what determines who gets face time in front of their audience when a user searches for something online.

A good SEO ranking means more business, and bad SEO performance means you have to work twice as hard to maintain the business you already have, plus keep more people coming to your site. It’s extra work you wouldn’t have to take on if you had just maintained your site from the get-go.

SEO has gone through all kinds of changes over the years, and now, you’ll be playing catch-up if you want to finally get it right.

2. More Security Attacks

Site performance on search is one thing, and site security is another. Make sure you tighten up any loose ends before you start promoting your site.

Security attacks happen online more often than you might think, especially for domains that have been left vulnerable to hackers. If you haven’t worked on your website in a while, it’s best to start here then focus on other website issues.

The last thing you want is to bring your site back up to speed only to leave new users’ information as open territory for hackers.

3. Plugin Issues

Some of the most outdated websites don’t even have plugins. Those that do can expect to have a bunch of glitches in their support tools. Plugins work best when the site runs well.

Otherwise, all kinds of issues could happen. Your email messaging has likely all gone to spam by now, your SEO tools are probably outdated, and your pop-ups may need some work, too. Whatever you used to implement plug-ins for, you may have to rethink the process now.

4. Broken Links

Another issue site owners tend to see when they’ve left a domain alone too long is broken links. You know, instead of going to your product page or contact information, a link leads to a “404 Error” page instead.

This means you have to swap out all your broken old links for new versions. Even if you want to take users to the same place, you have to do so via a different route, so to speak. New links ensure every person on your site finds what they’re looking for instead of ending up on an error page.

5. Aesthetic Differences

Remember when you first discovered WordArt for your middle school book reports? Or when coding went as far as special MySpace upgrades?

Some sites still look like that today. They’re elementary at best in comparison to all the advanced web design styles that have come out in recent years. Remember, part of making a site successful is giving it the right look, and you can’t do that with outdated codes or boring layouts.

6. Unprofessional Visuals

It’s one thing to look at a site’s aesthetics in terms of the layout, colors, and logo used, and another to upgrade the photos and videos. Some sites are now using videos as backgrounds or homepages; they’re moving into visuals that flow instead of being stationary.

You have to get on track with the trends of the times. This means removing all your boring stock photos and starting from scratch when it comes to branding visuals. Invest in professional photography and video services to best represent your brand.

7. Loading Errors

As you’re changing the visuals on your site and updating the design as a whole, you’re sure to come across a few loading errors. These are more than the redirect error mentioned above.

Loading errors mean a visual could be pixelated when it loads, or too slow to come up for a user. These are serious turn-offs. They are more likely to result in higher bounce rates than more conversions.

8. Outdated Information

Don’t forget to remove all the outdated information on your untouched website.

This applies to events that have already passed, contact details that have changed, and team members that are no longer at your business. You have to remove any traces of the old so that the new, updated site looks as good as possible.

9. Lost Information

Be careful of losing relevant information when removing all the outdated material. More so, take a look to make sure all your necessary information is still there!

It’s not uncommon for an untouched website to have lost some of its information. This could be due to hackers, but it could also be the result of your own negligence.

Make sure you have everything you need before re-launching your site. If you’re not sure how you’re going to keep track of everything moving forward, EnsureWP can help.

10. Mistakes Caused by Other Mistakes

Last but not least, consider the fact that some website issues are due to other mistakes. For example, a broken link can lead to a loading error. Or, an outdated design can cause lost information or vulnerability to hacking and attacks.

Everything on your site is connected, which is why you have to make sure the new version of your website is seamless. Otherwise, you’re only putting a band-aid on an issue that’s not fully resolved.
