10 Unique Companies That Do Good For Society

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Having a job you can take the utmost pride in isn’t as rare as you would think. More companies are catching on to the fact that we, as consumers and workers, want a more sustainable existence. We want to be a part of an environment that does more good than harm.

Have you ever dreamed of working for a company that made a positive impact on society, places that have community outreach programs, or donate to charity? With leaders that are strong, understanding, and compassionate?

In 2018, the number of companies that do good in the world is growing. With social media monitoring every step of your company’s actions, you need to step up your game. We’ve taken the time to compile a list of our favorite ways companies can make the world a better place.

Need some inspiration? Keep reading.

What Makes a Company Stand Out?

Before we begin our list, let’s consider what these companies did to get on it. How did they make a difference? How can other companies mimic them?

Let’s look at a few examples. FamilyVest is a financial planning firm that helps parents of special needs children.

Healthcare company Abbott Laboratories offers many benefits to their employees. And not your average, run-of-the-mill benefits.

How do they raise the bar? By offering paternity leave, extra aid for new mothers, and tuition reimbursement.

Facebook also honors parental leave. They pay for up to four months of leave for fathers, mothers, and same-sex couples. They know that inclusivity makes a difference in the community.

So, what other companies are doing awesome things around the world?

1. TOMS Shoes

Wanna make your friends jealous of your cute but conscious shoes?

TOMS shoes creator Blake (not Tom!) Mycoskie’s company is one that thrives off the slogan “One for One.” His company vows that for every shoe sold, they will give one to a child in need. Since its creation, it has given over 60 million pairs of shoes to 70 different countries.

But the shoes didn’t cut it. TOMS then went on to supply people in need with fresh, safe drinking water. TOMS supplies 140 liters of fresh water for every bag of coffee bought from their roasters.

2. REI

REI does amazing things for the members of its community. Become a member of the wilderness co-op and you’ll get dividends back at the end of every year.

REI can even boast about 8 years of making the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” according to FORTUNE magazine. They offer gear grants for employees that want to take on outdoor challenges. And they encourage camaraderie, community involvement, and appreciation of nature.

3. United Technologies

This is one company that also made a FORTUNE list. In 2016, they came in at #8 on the Change the World list. They “do well because they do good.”

Why? Because they’re rethinking the jet engine completely. They’ve figured out a way to make a healthier option.

They are striving to make aviation less of a threat to the environment and to us. Their new technology cuts fuel burn by 16%. This means that 3,600 fewer metric tons of carbon dioxide get generated per year.

4. Nike

Seven years ago, in 2011, sportswear company Nike made the world a promise. They vow that by 2020, they will cut the discharge of hazardous chemicals from its supply chain. They say that their commitment to this goal is “unwavering.”

5. Publix Supermarkets

Making an impact can even happen in the course of one day. Take, for example, Publix Serves Day.

This year, Publix took 5,700 of its employees to 150 different nonprofits. They specialize in feeding the hungry and homeless.

6. Patagonia

How does Patagonia celebrate its success? By launching a campaign to support other companies that want to do good in their communities. $20 Million and Change is a venture capital fund that supports start-ups that want to work with nature.

They even put $13 million into a solar energy fund in Hawaii to produce more sustainable energy. They also offer guidance and advice. And if their success is any indicator, we should follow their lead.

7. Duke Energy

North Carolina energy company Duke Energy created Duke Energy in Action. Why does this make the list?

This power company is all about empowering the community. They focus on volunteer work that brings their employees into the thick of the action.

8. Levi’s

We all know how plastic has a severe negative impact on the environment. Plastic is especially hard to recycle. So how has Levi’s tried to put a dent in the problem?

Through their Waste. Each pair of jeans gets made with 8 recycled water bottles. Their products contain at least 20% post-consumer plastic.

These jeans = green!

9. Gilead Sciences

Gilead Sciences created Sovaldi. This is the first cure known to Hepatitis C.

But, the cure doesn’t come without a high price tag. Since its creation, Gilead has now figured out a way to lower their prices.

In Egypt, Gilead lowered the pill’s price by 99% to increase its accessibility. They also created a generic version in India that is $100 for a 28-day treatment. This is a huge difference between where the pill price began: $1,000.

10. IDE Technologies

This India-based company is working to alleviate the world’s water shortage. How are they doing this? By operating a $1 billion desalination plant in California.

The facility converts up to 54 million gallons of saltwater into drinkable freshwater.

The company is doing so through reverse osmosis. This process is friendlier to the environment. It uses less energy than its thermal-based cousins.

The World Needs More Companies That Do Good and Make an Impact

So if you’re not working for one, consider making a change. Whether that’s taking steps to change the way your company operates or working for a new one you can take pride in!

Or you can go the route of the entrepreneur and create your own feel-good business. Turning a blind eye to the world around you doesn’t cut it anymore.

People are demanding higher quality operations. Greener products. Even Starbucks vows to remove plastic straws and lids from their stores by 2020, taking a cue from Nike.

Companies that do good feel great to work in and be a part of.
