10 Weird and Surprising Ways Water Is Used
70% of global water sources are used for irrigation and agriculture. Because that’s not an activity most people are directly involved with on a daily basis, it may come as a surprise that it’s one of the leading ways we use water.
When most people think of water usage, hydrating, brushing their teeth and showering are some of the first activities that come to mind. People may also think of chores like washing the dishes.
While those are all typical examples of how water is used, they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Once you dig a little deeper, the full scope of the answer to how do we use water shows just how much we depend on this resource.
To really demonstrate just how vital water is for modern society, here are 10 of the more surprising uses of water:
1. Making Beer
If you go out and have several beers over the course of a night, there’s a perfect chance you will wake up feeling quite thirsty. This scenario is why most people don’t view beer as something that requires water.
However, it wouldn’t be possible to make beer without using water. For a single 8.5 ounce glass of beer, an incredible 2,500 ounces of water are required to make it! That huge amount of water is used to process barley.
As if that wasn’t enough water, certain beers will require even more H2O during the brewing process depending on the specific ingredients that are included.
2. Building a Cellphone
Cellphones have become something that we all take for granted. There are literally billions of mobile phones around the globe. For every cellphone that someone has in their pocket or purse, over 3,000 gallons of water were used to build it.
3. Manufacturing Cars
There are all kinds of weird cars parts and other accessories. One trait that unites all of these parts, as well as all styles of cars, is it takes a lot of water to manufacture them.
When a new car is built, close to 400,000 liters of water is used throughout the process. To put this amount of water in perspective, it’s enough to fill up eight hockey rinks.
The effectiveness of waterjet technology is a big part of why car manufacturing is so reliant on H2O. You can learn more about the benefits of this technology, including its cutting versatility.
4. Drinking Coffee
Like beer, coffee is typically viewed as something that dehydrates you after drinking it. But if you look at the brewing process, water is the most crucial element.
Including the beans being roasted, one cup of coffee requires about 130 liters. That amount jumps all the way up to 18,900 liters of water for roasting a single kilogram of coffee beans!
5. Creating Memory Chips
There’s nothing worse than spilling a glass of water on your laptop. While many phones are now water resistant, a few ounces of water can still fry a computer in a matter of seconds.
This sensitivity is why you probably would never think of all the water that’s used to make the memory chips inside a computer. The manufacturing process for a 32MB chip takes close to 32 liters of water.
The output for the average factory in this industry is close to two million integrated circuits. That level of production requires over twenty million gallons of water every single month.
6. Purifying and Bottling Water
This is the most meta use of water on the list. A 12-ounce bottle of water has way more H2O tied to it. Between purification and making the plastic bottle, the total amount of water required can easily be over 75 ounces.
7. Producing Leather
You generally don’t want to get caught in the rain with a pair of leather shoes. But just like memory chips, the sensitivity of leather to water doesn’t mean this resource isn’t required during production.
Since the entire leather production process spans from feeding animals to actual manufacturing, a total of 8,000 liters of water are used for a single pair of shoes.
8. Electricity is One of the Ways We Use Water
Turning on a faucet isn’t the only way you use water at home. Flicking on a light switch or doing anything else that requires electricity also relies on water.
The root of this water usage comes from power plants that run on fossil fuel or nuclear energy. In order to stay cool, an average plant may have to withdraw several million gallons of water every day.
9. Driving Anywhere
We’ve already covered how every new car that’s produced requires hundreds of thousands of liters of water. But that’s not the end of a vehicle relying on water.
Whenever someone drives to a gas station and fills up, they’re putting a substance into their car that required a tremendous amount of water to refine. For every 800 million gallons of gas consumed, 1-2 billion gallons of water is used for production.
10. Bringing Sheets and Clothing to Retail Stores
Retail stores that sell cotton products like sheets and clothing rely on factories to turn fabric strings into finished products. For each item that comes out of those factories, thousands of gallons of water are used to create the final form.
And the use of water by these items doesn’t stop there. Once an item is purchased, a considerable amount of water will be used every time that it’s washed.
