7 Weirdest Bathroom Floor And Shower Tile Combinations That Will Blow Your Mind

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Remodeling the house is some homeowners’ dream come true, while for others, it’s a complete nightmare. However, there are times when it just has to be done.

It’s nice to switch things up when your home decor has become outdated or when you feel like you need a new, fresh feel. This goes for the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom, and, yes, the bathroom.

You have to be mindful of making all the rooms come together, though. It doesn’t do good to design a modern kitchen then walk into a shabby chic or vintage living room. Your home should feel consistent from the front door to the back entrance and everything in between.

To avoid looking a little weird or thinking too far out of the box while redoing the bathroom, check out these bathroom floor and shower tile combinations gone wrong.

1. Black and… Blue?

Black and white is a classic design style for any part of the home. Black cabinets are a beautiful contrast to white floors, and white accent pieces are lovely on black furniture. The two colors complement each other well when used correctly.

As such, there’s no sense in switching up this iconic combination. There are some bathrooms out there that have black floors and blue shower tiles, and it doesn’t mix. The blue fights the black instead of meshing with it well; it’s the last result you want when designing your new bathroom.

2. Rock Floors and Small Tiles

Home decor isn’t just about finding the right colors, but also understanding how different materials mix together. It’s kind of cool to have rock floors in a bathroom.

What isn’t cool, though, is to ruin this fun design style with the wrong shower tiles. If you’re using rock floors, the shower has to be simple; you can’t have two statement pieces trying to outshine one another.

As such, stick with long, elegant shower tiles instead of small, mosaic-like pieces. The texture small tiles create will take away from the interesting rock floors you’ve picked out.

3. A Pebble Floor

Another interesting bathroom remodeling idea is the use of a pebble floor. Again, you have to be careful to get this right.

The appeal of a pebble floor is to soothe the feet as you walk around barefoot. But, as functional as it is, you have to think about aesthetics, too. If you really want a pebble floor throughout the entire bathroom, you may as well put it in the shower, too.

This creates consistency and keeps you from choosing shower tiles that send everything out of whack.

4. Spots and Stripes

Spots are cool on floors. Stripes are cool on floors. The two mixed together in bathroom floor and shower tile combinations are not cool.

Spots and stripes rarely ever go together, and when they do, it takes a trained eye for interior design to make them work. Save yourself the trouble and don’t pretend like you’re a top-notch decorator.

Keep things simple if you want the absolute best outcome for your new bathroom design.

5. Over the Top Mosaics

Maybe you understand spots and stripes don’t work, but you’re looking for something more than a traditional bathroom design. Consider the thought of incorporating mosaics, but try not to go over the top.

A fun way to bring mosaics into the bathroom is to use them as the backsplash or border for the mirror. Mosaics also work well in strips – like a small line from the ceiling to the floor in the shower or as geometric patterns on the floor.

This allows you to use colorful bathroom tile without trying too hard or confusing the eye. It’s fun and exciting, yet neutral and sophisticated at the same time. It’s the look you should be going for.

Then, there are the mosaics that do too much. Such is the case when a homeowner decides to make the entire bathroom floor one large mosaic or to create a full design in the entire shower. This moves you away from elegant to just plain out-there. It doesn’t look right, and you’re sure to get sick of it faster than you think.

6. Inlaid Features

Mosaics and inlaid features are kind of similar, but they’re worth discussing separately. Some homeowners choose to create inlaid sayings or design pieces.

They may use small tiles to display a note of welcome or happiness on the wall or to put a classic Mr. and Mrs. spin on the master bathroom. However, inlaid features more often than not miss the mark.

You never know if you’re going to get sick of the whole his and hers design style – or if things don’t work out.

You may also decide to paint the bathroom walls one day or swap out the towels for a new color, and then you’ll have to limit your options based on the inlaid “rug”, or shower “mat”, or whatever else you put on the bathroom floor.

7. Putting Tile on the Walls

Speaking of painting the walls or opting for inlaid wall decor, leave the tiles for the floor and the shower. There’s no need to go up onto the walls and decorate the whole bathroom with what you’ve put on the floor.

It’s good to create a contrast in the room. The walls and the floors should complement each other by the ways that they’re different, not by being exactly the same. Keep this in mind no matter what tile materials or colors you choose.

Choosing Your Own Bathroom Floor and Shower Tile Combinations

It’s one thing to read about bathroom floor and shower tile combinations that don’t work and another to figure out what works for you. Take your time picking everything out during the redesign process and during installation, too.

This will ensure you make the best choice possible and end up with a look you really love.
