What you need are a few staple foods that make you feel full and help you stay satisfied for hours. And you’re just in luck!

These five unexpectedly filling foods may be the trick to beating your inexplicable hunger while staying healthy:

1. Mackerel

There are certain key responses in the brain that tell the body it’s full. Tanycytes in the brain can pick up on certain amino acids in food to trigger a reaction that leads to less hunger and suppressed appetites.

Mackerel, a healthy fish with oily meat, is high in two amino acids that trigger these responses. Chowing down on Mackerel at dinner or lunch will help deter cravings and hunger throughout the evening.

2. Cottage Cheese

Not exactly what you think of when trying to come up with a filling snack? Cottage cheese is a dynamic craving-killer since you can pair it with either sweet or savory foods tastefully.

Casein protein in cottage cheese tells your brain its fuller sooner and satiated for longer periods. It’s also a slow-releasing protein, so it’s a great option for a late-night snack.

3. Sweet Potatoes

French fries, baked potatoes, hash browns–these foods are usually prepared with typical golden or russet potatoes. The high sugar and starch in these roots act like empty carbs that only help us stay full for a short while.

Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are high in fiber and can kick your cravings while tasting just as delicious. Substitute sweet potatoes whenever you can, as they are a comparable fill-in for most potato recipes and won’t sacrifice flavor.

4. Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are made by puffing up rice with air and compressing it into a dry snack patty. The texture of rice cakes are tough and crunchy, and tend to be savory (though you can buy flavored sweet alternatives).

Rice cakes are low in calories, so filling up on them isn’t something that will make you feel guilty afterward. Try replacing fatty foods like chips, biscuits, crackers, and fries with rice cakes.

5. Plain Nuts

Feeling full usually means giving your body some sort of fat to “chew on” while you wait around for the next meal. And when you think of appetite-curbing fats, you probably don’t immediately think of a handful of nuts.

However, a few unflavored nuts (skipping the salts and sugars that are added in) can serve as a filling, heart-healthy snack.
