7 Weird and Crazy Things Property Managers Have Seen at Rental Inspections

Property managers have to see some really unusual things when they go in to do their rent inspection. People leave in a hurry, get evicted, or simply choose not to clean when they move out.

Whatever the case, the result is often times pretty wild.

7 Crazy Things Found During a Rent Inspection

Some of these are a result of communications with current renters, but all have to do with situations that property managers have had to face.

1. Microwave Assault

Some people have problems of their own that grow into issues with the outside world. One renter, experiencing some kind of delusional bad dreams, made a correlation between their microwave and a murder plot.

A tenant wrote a letter to the rental agency complaining that they and the federal government were trying to have them murdered with “microwave assault weapons” in their sleep.

They were probably referring to the microwave paranoia that conspiracy theorists have been attributing to the illnesses of some U.S. embassy employees.

2. The Unfortunate Reality

Many people imagine that a dead body in an apartment is the result of a murder case or larger criminal scheme, sometimes, however, it’s not that complicated.

However, landlords sometimes enter the apartments of their elderly tenants to find that they have sadly passed away. When this happens, it isn’t uncommon for the deceased to have been left for a couple of weeks. This is an unfortunate reality for many landlords.

3. The Unexpected Obsession

A landlord in the UK reported that a tenant had plastered their apartment with photos of the landlord herself. The person had moved out but chosen to leave the photos of their beloved landlord hanging so they would know.

Nothing happened after, so maybe it was a prank. In any case, that’s unsettling.

4. The Lone Porno

One landlord reported a normal, every-day inspection until the very end. The house was empty, all except the presence of a magazine sitting in the basement corner.

When he picked it up, he found that it was an extreme porn magazine. That’s an awkward conversation waiting to happen.

5. The Farm

Apartment buildings have stories upon stories, literally and metaphorically. Many landlords have reported finding the remnants of large amounts of animals. Whether they be chicken coops or dog kennels, there’s some serious clean up involved.

One landlord even found a living, full-grown emu. No furniture, just an emu.

6. The Buddha

One landlord knocked and knocked on their tenant’s door to start an inspection. They put the key in and unlocked the door only to find their renter fully nude, deep in meditation.

7. The Squatters

One inspector came into a home thinking that it would be empty while the tenants were out on vacation. They looked out the back window only to find a nude couple lounging in the vacant pool! Luckily, though, nothing was stolen.

In the face of all of these troubles, property managers still brave their harsh world of weirdness. They do a great job, and finding property management agencies isn’t as hard as you would think.
