5 Hilarious Fake Amazon Review for Bic Pens ‘For Her’

Sometimes marketing departments hit it out of the park. Apple, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s, for instance, all understand their product, and more important, their market.

Then there are some departments who seemingly have no clue what they’re doing. As a result, their ideas are…less than stellar.

This is one of those examples.

A few years ago, Bic, a leading pen manufacturer, decided to target women specifically. That’s one weird way to try and attract customers, we guess.

Why pointlessly gender a product as mundane as a writing utensil? Your guess is as good as ours.

But two things are for certain: It was a colossal mistake on their part and it resulted in some amazing user reviews.

Here are five of our favorite fake Amazon reviews for Bic Pens For Her line.

Men Have Really Noticed My Lips More! – “gentlesoul”

We’ll kick off our list of Bic Pens For Her Amazon reviews with a fantastic entry from user gentlesoul, who ‘mistakes’ the pen for lipstick.

Frankly, it’s as biting as it is hilarious, with inclusions like, “The purple lipliner pen is a little too dark for me, but the pink one really helps accent my ‘cupids bow’ and keeps my lipstick from wandering away to other areas of my face.”

Better Than Calgon! – “CarrieLou”

“These pens make me feel so feminine and desirable,” this review starts out.

“I can barely keep the men away when I’m holding one of these in my dainty hand. My husband has started to take fencing lessons just to keep the men away.”

I No Longer Need Feminism! – “Karen”

When you gender a product that, frankly, doesn’t need it, you’re going to get quite a bit of backlash. Few took it quite as far as “Karen” who understandably felt a bit perturbed by Bic’s marketing efforts.

They write: “Since discovering these pens, my urges for radical feminism have ceased! Now that I and my fellow sisters have our very own pens, who needs equal pay, bodily autonomy, or to be treated like I’m more than a baby factory with fabulous legs? THERE’S A PEN JUST FOR US. WE’VE MADE IT!”

We have a feeling this isn’t quite what Bic intended when they began their promotional pens efforts.

Something Is Wrong With These Knitting Needles – “C. Thompson”

From angry to straight-up silly, user “C. Thompson” got their point across using absurdist humor.

Here’s a quick example of what we’re talking about:

“For some reason the ends are broken and they make a clicking sound when you push them, then this silver thing comes out the other end and it gets black marks all over my yarn!!!!”

Gents, Don’t Buy These – Hold Out For Bic For Him! – “D. Berkowitz”

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the fact that ‘D. Berkowitz’ is likely a reference to famous serial killer David Berkowitz. That means that the premise of their joke involves a serial killer reviewing pens.

That’s how bizarre the fake Amazon reviews for Bic For Her pens got.

Sadly, “Mr. Berkowitz” didn’t care much for the pens, only giving them one star out of five because, “I took one into a meeting at the office and couldn’t stop drawing ponies all over my business proposal. Ponies!”

Sounds like an interesting meeting to us.

So what have we learned here today? For starters, the Internet makes all marketing gaffes eternal. Pens For Her hit the market in 2012, and here we are six years later talking about them.

Perhaps more importantly, stop to think about your marketing efforts before you commit to pouring thousands of dollars into a new product. Because it won’t always end well.
