10 Weird Yet Undeniably Clever Space Saving Tips for Your Home

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Many Americans are moving towards living in and buying smaller homes. But with that comes a challenge. Where do they put all their worldly stuff?

The answer is, in one of these space saving weird storage devices. Some of them you have hanging around your house and others you’ll have to special order – but they’re all guaranteed to get stuff organized.

Get some organizational inspiration below.

1. Under the Sink Tension Rods

If you spend a lot of time on Pinterest, you know that tension rods are the organizer’s best friend.

They’re cheap, adjustable and available about anywhere. One place they can help you find storage? Under your bathroom or kitchen sink.

Think about all those bottles of cleaners that won’t stack, just sitting on the bottom of the cabinet. They all have spray handles, correct?

Well, those spray handles hang pretty on a tension rod! Put one from one side of the cabinet to the other about 6 inches from the top of the cabinet.

Hang your spray bottles on them and now you have under-the-counter space free that you didn’t have before!

2. Tension Rod Shoe Rack

Another way to use a tension rod? To store all those high heels in your closet!

For this project, you’ll need two tension rods, of the same size and length.

Extend it from one side to the other of your closet, about a foot off the ground.

Then, put another one about four inches down from it and two inches in front (towards the front of the closet). Now you have a rack for your shoes and space underneath it.

This rack is great to hang heels on since you just pop the heel over the rod.

3. Small Space Rolling Cabinet

You know that gap of space between your fridge and your counter? The one where you always see gross melting ice cubes and bits of food?

Well, they make a kind of cabinet that fits right in that small crack! You can keep spices on it, boxes of baking mix (sideways) and anything else you need.

It clears up cabinet space and keeps things handy. You’re also using up negative space that wasn’t serving you any storage before.

It’s a big win!

4. Your Oven

If you don’t bake often, or ever, you can store things in your oven! Plenty of families pile their extra baking sheets and pans in the oven, which gets them out of the cabinets their shapes weren’t made for.

If you use the in-the-oven storage method, make sure the other people in your house know about it!

If they turn on the oven without knowing, you could be facing some really hot pans to move or melted plastic.

If you really never cook, you could do the Sex In The City thing and keep extra shoe boxes in there.

You do you!

5. Plastic Bin Drawers

Those ten dollars or so plastic sets of drawers you see at Target have more uses than we can count. Do you have a spot in your house with wire shelving built in?

Throw a drawer shelf on top of it. Almost all of them come apart so you can adjust the height and number of drawers.

Not only do you now have two or three levels of storage instead of one, but you have built-in organization.

All you need now is a label maker!

6. Product Holding Shower Curtain

You know what has storage properties that you’d never think of? Yes, Your shower curtain!

Thanks to the crazy thing we call the internet, you can get a curtain that has mesh pockets that hold shampoo and other bath products.

The mesh pockets help the water drain, so you don’t get mold. P.S. did you know you can wash plastic shower curtains?

That way you don’t have them standing around making an oozy mess on the corners of the tub.

It also reduces the number of times you drop one on your toe or it falls and makes a big noise that makes you jump!

7. Outsourcing

Have you ever seen those individual storage containers for sale? Get some of the junk out of your house and into one of those. These are great for things you don’t use often, like holiday decorations!

Or you can store furniture in them if you’re moving into a smaller space during renovations, or living in a much smaller house.

Just make sure you pay the rent on your storage unit. If you don’t they have the right to repossess it and your treasures may show up on the show Storage Wars!

8. Plate Racks

Another in-cabinet storage method is to use plate racks to separate kinds of dishes. It’s likely you have different sizes of plates, like dinner, salad, and saucers.

Instead of stacking each one up on the bottom of the cabinet, get a cheap plate rack. They come in one or two tiers, so you can stack the smaller plates on one level and put the bigger plates below.

9. Peg Boards

You know what you can organize on a pegboard? Literally anything.

If you find a hook that fits and is strong enough, use a Xacto knife to cut a small spot out of a plastic container and hook it on. Now you have quick access to a place for doodads that aren’t taking up space in your junk drawer.

10. Bed Risers

You know those strange things they advise some kids to bring to college? You can put them on things like your couches and under your bed.

Why? It frees up space for under-the-bed or couch storage drawers.

Your Space Saving Designs

Whichever of these space saving products you decide to try first, know that it’s normal for things to look messier before they get better.

Organizing entails taking things out of places, so you can find a new place to put them in.

Be patient and don’t get discouraged – you’ll get organized eventually!
