5 Weird Home Paint Jobs and Exterior Paint Colors

There are a lot of weird things in this world that are better kept behind closed doors.

Wacky paint colors and schemes are one of those things. It’s one thing to paint your walls lime green or deck out your living room in zebra print furniture. It’s another thing entirely to paint your house those colors.

1. Neon Colors

What constitutes a “good” color or paint job is subjective, which is a point that will get raised a few times in this article.

That being said, most would agree that a neon paint job is not a great option for an exterior home color. Whether it’s blaze orange, highlighter yellow, or neon pink, it’s probably going to upset the neighbors.

If tried-and-true neutrals are too bland for your taste, pick a color like navy blue or dark green. Those colors can help your home stand out — without it needing to glow.

2. Branded Homes

Yes, this is a thing. Some homes are painted to reflect the owner’s own business; others are branded with a popular clothing or designer logo.

Unless your corporate sponsor is shelling out the big bucks for you to have their logo defacing your house, we suggest skipping this in favor of a more traditional look.

The exception to this might be if you’re running a business out of your home. But even then, it might be safer to stick to a well-placed sign in the front yard.

3. Homes with Murals

While it’s possible that a well-done mural can look appealing on a home’s exterior, more often the opposite is true.

Again, like the neon colors, we mentioned above, having a house that stands out that dramatically is generally a good way to annoy the neighbors.

Save the unique, larger-than-life paintings for interior walls.

4. Animal Prints

On the gaudiness scale, animal prints are probably a notch below logoed homes — or not. Maybe it’s a tie.

These prints are better suited to clothing and accessories — not so much on the outside of a home. Whether your favorite animal is a zebra, cheetah, or leopard, save the loud patterns for somewhere other than your home’s exterior.

5. All-Brown

This is another subjective item on our list. However, there is actually research that claims that brown homes sell for less overall than their white-clad counterparts.

If you’re painting soon, opt for a safer, trendier color. Alan’s House Painting in Davis, California put together a helpful list of 2018’s hottest exterior colors. Surprise — brown’s not on it. Instead, they suggest hues like ivory, “greige,” or blue.

Avoid Weird Exterior Paint Colors

We like weird stuff as much as (…or more than) the next person. However, when it comes to something like exterior paint colors, “weird” can become a detriment. Get too off-the-wall, and you can impact your home’s resale value, upset your HOA, and just generally annoy your neighbors.

Sometimes the weirdness is better kept behind closed doors.
