Strange Hobbies: 10 of the Weirdest and Craziest Things People Collect

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The movies of Quentin Tarantino are weird and crazy but can you guess what his unusual collecting passion is? He loves to collect those board games based on TV shows and movies.

Forget about boring collections like coins and stamps. If you want to be entertained, check out this list of 10 weird and crazy things people collect.

1. Soap

There are worse interests than collecting things but for some good clean fun, nothing beats collecting soap. Carol Vaughn of Birmingham in the United Kingdom has been collecting bars of soap since 1991. She’s amassed over 5000 bars of soap from all over the world.

She found one of her favorites not far from home in a local shop. It’s shaped like Santa Claus’s head. It only goes to prove that you don’t have to go far from home to start collecting.

2. Coca-Cola Cans

Take a look in any trash can almost anywhere in the world and you’ll often find an empty Coke can. While the Coca-Cola and Coke logos are pretty standard the cans vary enormously. Cans from around the world offer the serious collector with lots of opportunities.

Davide Andreani from Italy has special editions, commemorative cans, and cans from around the world. The designs are sometimes very beautiful and every can tells a story. It’s the largest such collection in the world.

3. Samurai Swords

Samurai Swords and Katanas are beautiful examples of the art of the Japanese sword maker. Katanas, in particular, are a long, gently curving sword developed in the time of the Kamakura Shogunate (1185-1333). They were developed to cut through the tougher leather armor of Mongol invaders.

A collection of these swords can look impressive as they come in a range of sizes, blades, and colors. There’s interest in the craftsmanship, history, and striking beauty.

4. Mobile phones

The world is divided into two types of people. Those that can remember when there were no mobile phones and those who don’t remember a time when they weren’t everywhere. The first mobile phone in the US was launched in 1983 by Motorola and there have been thousands of models since.

Because there is a new model out so often and there are so many phones around they make the perfect collector’s item. Some represent important stages in the development of phones and others are quirky and interesting. Stefan Polgari has over 3,500 phones in his collection.

5. Traffic Cones

One or two traffic cones may have been collected by drunk students. A collection of over 130 is crazy. David Morgan has just such a collection.

David also claims to have made the first plastic traffic cone in 1961. Hopefully, his collection contains the first-ever plastic traffic cone.

6. Bras

A collection of 5,000 bras is rather impressive. It’s only a shame this collection is owned by a man who has no intention of wearing any. What is heartwarming is that Chen Qingzu made his collection while touring China giving seminars on breast cancer.

7. AOL CDs

In the early days of the internet, AOL marketed its internet services by giving away CDs. These CDs allowed you to install their system and usually gave a free trial period. They used to turn up in the post and they were given away free attached to magazines.

Because they were free and so plentiful they were thrown away. Now people collect them. Rare ones are traded on eBay and elsewhere.

8. Chamber Pots

There was a time when every bed had a chamber pot under it. It was the only way to go, literally. Now, collectors love to own these pieces of history and have them on display rather than under the bed.

9. Books

There are various collections of books containing valuable first editions or publications with historical significance. The movie “American Animals” an original “Birds of America” in a four-volume folio worth more than $11 million plays a starring role. In the movie, four students attempt to “collect” the set of books with disastrous consequences.

10. Banana Labels

Those stickers you find on bananas are collectible. There are lots of them and Becky Martz has over 20,000. She started collecting in 1991.

The Crazy Things People Collect

When you learn about some of the things people collect you’ve got to wonder whether the collections are crazy or whether the collectors have gone bananas. Almost anything seems collectible — there are no limits.
