Unique From Birth: 7 Weird Nursery Room Ideas for Your New Baby

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Are you having a baby?

If so, congrats!

Keep in mind that ou should start setting up your baby’s nursery by the time you’re 20 weeks pregnant. Furniture delivery can take months. And you want to take advantage of the renewal of energy that usually comes in the second trimester.

But how do you decide on a nursery design?

Preparing for a baby can be daunting as you don’t know which are the best products to buy. BabyGoss has a list of the best products to buy for your little one.

You can go with the old standbys: pink, blue, and the neutral stalwart yellow. Or you can do something weird.

Check out these seven weird nursery room ideas.

1. Neon Night Light

What better way to set the ambiance for your baby’s soothing sanctuary than the electric light of inert neon gas? The steady, low light floods the entire room with any color of your choice. It’s great for mood lighting and for Instagram pictures.

Go full Vegas with flashing neon arrows, a splayed deck of cards, mini-pyramids, and the Eiffel tower. An homage to baby’s conception, perhaps? Or keep it subtle with just your baby’s name in lights.

Reality star Khloe Kardashian, renowned for her subtlety, used a pink sign in handwritten script to spell out her daughter’s moniker. It casts a sweet glow that plays off the room’s white furniture and highlights a crystal chandelier.

2. Menagerie

Stuffed animals are a common plaything for young ones. Take it to the next level by filling the nursery with a veritable menagerie of animals.

Get giant, lifelike stuffed animals: giraffes that nearly graze the ceiling, a lion that takes up an entire corner. Find some unique taxidermied animal busts like blackbuck and kudu. Or try a cheeky DIY by mounting stuffed animals to wood plaques.

Carry the theme over to the crib. Once you’ve determined the right mattress for your baby by checking out Return of the Stork, cover it in zoo patterned sheets. Hang a matching quilt over the side of the crib.

Treat the whole room like a growing collection.

3. Big Top Bedroom

They may have canceled the circus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the Big Top home to baby. Deck out your baby’s nursery with a circus theme.

Paint the ceiling like a circus tent with alternating stripes that fan out from the light fixture. Whether you’re going traditional or more modern, a Big Top ceiling immediately sets the scene for the rest to come.

Get coordinating striped bumpers for the crib. A blanket with embroidered balloons finishes it off. Some popcorn pop art provides variety.

Include every animal in the circus. Feature artwork of monkeys with curled tails or elephants dressed in their circus best.

Get zebra bookends to reign in your collection of books like “If I Ran the Circus” by Dr. Seuss or “Olivia Saves the Circus” by Ian Falconer.

If you’re not freaked out by clowns, sneak some in while your baby’s too young to get scared. Print and frame some freak show illustrations for a free macabre touch.

4. Bugged Out

While you’re probably more focused on ridding your house of bugs, for your budding entomologist, consider creepy crawly creative nursery decor.

Large format beetle wallpaper is surprisingly palatable and modern. Pair it with vintage scientific bug charts and pinned butterflies. Echo the patterns and colors with decorative pillows and geometric metal baskets.

You’ll wind up with a refined ode to a favored kid’s pastime: catching bugs.

5. Fit for Royalty

Every baby girl is a princess, and every boy a prince. Why not celebrate your child’s distinct nobility with a royal baby bedroom idea?

Harness the formality of a bygone kingdom by adding crown molding at the ceiling and picture molding to the walls. Get an ornate chandelier for the center of the room.

Traditional patterns like toile give textiles an aristocratic touch. Use lots of drapery for the windows and a gathered canopy over the crib. Furniture with Queen Anne legs gives an instant royal flair.

Incorporate frilly touches, cloches, and gilded frames.

6. Mustaches

For some reason, the juxtaposition of a mustache with a baby is hard to resist. Soothe your hipster heart by designing an unusual nursery around men’s facial hair.

Mustache sheets and pillows are easy enough to come by. You can also get mustache shaped drawer pulls for the changing dresser.

Make a mobile out of dangling cutouts of your favorite mustache shapes. Your baby will love reaching for the handlebars, horseshoes, and Fu Manchus alike.

Hang framed pictures of the mustachioed elite. Give Tom Selleck, Groucho Marx, and Hulk Hogan pride of place.

Don’t forget the punny onesies. Kids feel like they constantly mustache you questions. You’ll have to grin and bear it.

There are pacifiers that make it look like your adorable, drooling offspring has a mustache. There are also more than a handful of children’s books about mustaches, including one about a baby born with one.

7. Dia De Los Muertos

A moody nursery with masks and skulls might seem suited to the Addams Family, but there’s no better way to expand your family than by honoring your family. Plus, dark walls will help blackout the room better for daytime naps.

While the Day of the Dead sounds dark and brooding, the actual celebration is awash in the colors of the rainbow.

Sugar skulls provide pattern and high-contrast visual interest for your baby to stare at. Channel bright colored marigolds with tissue paper poofs.

Paper banners strung all around the room make a festive place for midnight feeds and early morning wakeups. A black lace crib skirt is the perfect gothic nod to traditional dress.

Have Any Weird Nursery Room Ideas of Your Own?

There’s no reason your baby’s nursery has to be traditional. If you’re drawn to weird nursery room ideas, go for it! Celebrate bugs, facial hair, even festivals for the dead. Perhaps the weirdest part is how much effort you’ll put into creating a beautiful space your baby will refuse to sleep in.
