Permanent Mistakes: 8 Terrible Tattoo Trends to Avoid at All Costs

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Tattoos last a lifetime, so it’s not something you should get done on a whim. A tattoo is something you should think about. So getting one impulsively at the tail-end of a bachelor party probably isn’t so wise.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of terrible tattoo trends. If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, here are 8 of the worst tattoo ideas.

1. Any Face or Neck Tattoos

Face or neck tattoos are some of the worst ones you could ever get, no matter what the graphic is. With any other bad tattoos, at least you can cover them up.

Pretty much the only time you should ever consider getting a face or neck tattoo is if you’re 100% sure you don’t need to get a job again. Pretty much all research into hiring trends suggest that a face or neck tattoo will make you significantly less hireable.

2. Chinese Words

This one doesn’t apply if you actually have some kind of link to China. Say you’re American Born Chinese for example. Go right ahead and get a tattoo of Chinese writing.

The problem with these kinds of tattoos is that plenty of people who have zero connection to Asian culture get them. As a non-Asian, at best, you can expect to be looked down on by Asians for getting this kind of tattoo.

There are also many cases of people getting the wrong words tattooed on themselves. If you can’t actually read the letters, there’s no way for you to know if a mistake has been made.

People frequently get Chinese tattoos with ridiculous translations or misinterpretations of the language. Sometimes, the letters are even accidentally put on backward. Often, people only realize their mistake years later when someone who can actually read it laughs hysterically at their tattoo.

3. Memes

It seems like whenever a new meme gets popular, there’s always one or two people who get a tattoo of it. Memes emerge and get worn out at such a fast pace most of them are forgotten about within the year.

You might be able to cash in on the popularity of the meme for a few weeks, but after that, the tattoo will just look ridiculous. Have you ever tried to explain an internet meme to someone who doesn’t use the internet? They have no frame of reference and it seems kind of ridiculous to explain it.

Imagine having to do that every time someone doesn’t get your tattoo. Meme tattoos might be amusing in the short-term, but in the long-term, you’re certainly going to regret it.

4. Celebrity Tattoos

Getting a tattoo depicting a celebrity’s face or tattooing over a celebrity autograph is one of the worst tattoo ideas. This is especially true if the celebrity is still alive. Think about all of the misconduct stories that have come out about certain celebrities in the last few years.

For example, many fans of the band Lostprophets had their arms, legs, and various other body parts signed by singer Ian Watkins. They then went to a tattoo shop and had the signatures tattooed over.

Unfortunately, Mr. Watkins turned out to be one of the worst child abusers of all time. Imagine having this guy’s signature tattooed onto your arm…

Even if the celebrity is dead, it doesn’t mean you are safe. Sometimes, shocking revelations come to light after a celebrity has been laid to rest. This is what happened with BBC presenter Jimmy Savile.

5. Gang/Prison Tattoos

You would think it goes without saying that you shouldn’t get gang or prison tattoos if you’re not in a gang or if you haven’t been to prison. A lot of people still do it though.

These tattoos are regarded as needing to be “earned”. If you run into someone who’s earned these tattoos legitimately, you’re in for a bad time.

There are a wide variety of prison or gang tattoos and some of them aren’t immediately obvious. A good tattoo artist should be aware of tattoos that might have some kind of gang affiliation, but you should always research your tattoo ideas to be sure.

6. Your Significant Other’s Name

This is one of the classic stupid tattoo trends. As a rule of thumb, the less time you’ve been with someone, the stupider it is to get their name tattooed.

If you end up breaking up with the person whose name you’ve tattooed on yourself, you then have to explain the tattoo to any new partners. Most people are not going to be happy with you having someone else’s name on yourself.

If you get this kind of tattoo, there’s a big chance you’re going to have to have it removed. Do you have a tattoo you want removed? Here’s a helpful link.

7. Barbed Wire Tattoos

There was a time when this kind of tattoo was an original idea. That time has long passed. Barbed wire tattoos are probably one of the most uninspired and played out tattoo trends on this list.

If you get this kind of tattoo, you can guarantee that thousands of other people in the world have a tattoo exactly like it. Why not go for something a bit more original?

8. Portrait Tattoos

Portrait tattoos are something that you should approach with extreme caution. When a portrait is done by a skilled artist, it can look fantastic. But if something is even slightly off with a portrait, it can look ridiculous.

Since portraits need to be as realistic as possible, only the best tattoo artists are capable of pulling something like this off.

Avoid Bad Tattoo Trends

If you’re not sure if a tattoo is a good idea or not, the best thing to do is to ask the artist. If a tattoo is trendy and everyone and their dog is getting it, a tattoo artist will be able to tell you. You’ll want to avoid bad tattoo trends.

They also have a lot of experience with the kinds of tattoos people regret since they will do a lot of cover-ups. If a tattoo artist advises you against getting a tattoo, you probably shouldn’t do it.
