Bring It On! 7 Team Spirit Ideas That Can Build Spirit and Friendship in a Dance Team

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

So, you’ve assembled a team of talented dancers. They move as one on stage, but they don’t seem to be forming bonds off stage. What can you do?

Whether you run a high school dance team or a team of competitive youth dancers, spirit and friendship are important factors. Ultimately, you’ll want dancers that have each other’s backs and enjoy what they do.

Luckily, there are plenty of team spirit ideas that can help make your dancers proud to be a part of the team.

Do you want to know more? Keep reading to discover our top tips on building spirit and friendship among your dancers.

1. Make Practices Fun

Did your parents ever sign you up for a sport or team as a child? If you didn’t enjoy it, you probably didn’t care much about participating in the activity or socializing with the other children.

The same principle applies to dance. If you want your kids or students to do their best and be proud of their team, you need to make sure practices are fun.

Give the team time to socialize at the beginning or end of each practice to help budding friendships grow. You may also give them tasks to work on together, like picking a song for the next dance or deciding what color their new costumes should be.

Not only will they like having a say, but it gives everyone a chance to talk and work towards a common goal.

2. Treat Everyone the Same

When your team regularly competes, it can be all too easy to keep putting the best dancers in the spotlight. However, this can breed jealousy and attribute to cliques and drama forming in your team.

Pay attention to each dancer’s strengths and make an effort to showcase them during competitions, shows, or pep rallies. Treating your dancers as equally as possible will help everyone feel as though they are an important part of the team, thus building their team spirit.

3. Organize a Fundraiser

Does your team need to raise money for new costumes or for transportation to your next event? Don’t rely on the parents to come up with the money themselves. Instead, have your team fundraise together.

Organizing a team fundraiser gives your dancers another chance to work together towards a common goal.

Let them brainstorm and come up with possible ideas. Then make sure the entire team is together during the fundraiser, whether it’s washing cars or holding a bake sale.

It’s a nice way for the team to bond and talk outside of practice. Plus, they’ll likely feel closer to the team after working hard to earn the money they need.

4. Volunteer Together

If your team doesn’t need to raise any money, you can still bring them closer together by volunteering.

Again, have the team discuss possible options. Not only is this another way to encourage teamwork, but your dancers will get to know each other better by listening to what causes they care about.

Once the team finishes their volunteer work, consider setting some time aside in the next practice to talk about it. Ask the team to discuss how they felt volunteering and if they would like to do it again. This is a nice way to encourage open communication among your entire team, which can be extra beneficial if you notice cliques forming.

5. Celebrate Accomplishments

Did your team just come home from a competition with a big win? Or maybe the really rocked at the school’s pep rally.

Right after these accomplishments happen, the team will likely be feeling closer and happier than ever. Take advantage of this excitement by having the team celebrate together.

This can be as simple as going out for dinner or ice cream. Your dancers will have loads to talk about, and celebrating big wins together can help everyone feel like part of the team.

6. Offer Swag

Sometimes something as simple as a t-shirt with the team name on it can help inspire team spirit. Offer t-shirts, sweatshirts, athletic shorts, backpacks, and custom dance pins with the team’s name and logo on it.

They’ll be able to wear their swag with pride around the school, during practices, and in their free time. This can help build their sense of team spirit as they can show the world that they’re part of your team.

7. Have Team Outings

Your team members may talk and be pleasant to each other during practice. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all close friends.

To really encourage friendship amongst your team, you want them to spend time together outside practices. While fundraising and volunteering do this, they’re still getting together for a mandatory dance team activity.

Consider hosting a team outing, such as a bowling night, camping trip, or mini golf afternoon. Make it clear that it isn’t mandatory, but that it will be a lot of fun.

Your dancers will feel more relaxed since they won’t have to focus on their dance moves or raising enough money to get new costumes. Instead, they can all enjoy a laid-back day with their team.

The Best Team Spirit Ideas

Don’t settle for a team of dancers that don’t get along. Instead, follow these team spirit ideas to help them connect with the other dancers and the team as a whole. From ensuring practices are fun to hosting team outings, there are plenty of ways you can build friendship and spirit in your dance team.
