9 Weird Things to Do with Wine Corks That Will Amaze Anyone

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You may have opened a few wine bottles in your time but did you ever stop and look at the stopper. They are not all the same. There are in fact 7 different wine bottle stoppers including the regular cork.

Don’t throw away your used wine corks. Used corks can be transformed for an endless number of uses. See our 9 favorite things to do with wine corks for fun.

1. Stamps

If you have small children you always need new ways of keeping them entertained. Creative play is wonderful but it’s not easy to come up with new ideas. Here’s a fun creative play idea using your old wine corks.

Draw a shape onto one end of a cork. A simple triangle or square is a good way to start. Using a craft knife, carefully cut out the shape so that you are left with the shape in relief.

Dip the shaped end of the cork in paint or use a stamp pad. Stamp away to create a repeating design on paper. Make more shapes such as hearts, lines, crosses, and arrows.

2. Name Cards

A dinner party with wine is a wonderful way to meet up with friends. It’s important to consider where everybody will sit. If you don’t, you could find that one part of the table is busy with conversation and another is quiet and dull.

Think about the personalities and existing relationships. A shy person may need some moral support so seat them next to a friend. Loud people may need splitting up so they don’t unbalance the table.

Once you’ve decided on your table plan, you will need name cards to indicate who should sit where. Take a wine cork and cut a split down the side, from top to bottom. The cut should be no more than halfway through the cork.

Using some pretty card or paper create name tags. They should be long enough for a name and tall enough to fit into the slit you’ve cut into your corks. Write out the names of your guests on the cards and fit them to the corks.

You can decorate the corks. Make a hole in the top of each cork with a skewer and stick a sprig of foliage or a flower in. Alternatively, place a spray of herbs into the hole especially if they complement the food you’re serving.

3. String Store

Do you have short lengths of string that are too long to throw away but too short to make a ball? Corks are ideal for winding a piece of string on to. Cut a notch in the cork and catch the end of the string in it for secure storage.

4. Bath Mat

Cork is a common material for bath mats. It feels great on your feet and survives well in moist bathroom environments. Try a twist on the cork bathroom mat by using wine corks.

You’ll need to save natural cork wine corks for some time or have a good supplier of corks. Around 200 corks should do it. You’ll also need a hot glue gun, glue sticks, and some shelf liner.

Start by cutting each cork in half lengthwise and sanding any rough bits from the flat side of the corks. Use a sharp knife on a cutting board. Be careful and keep your fingers safely away from the blade.

Lay out your corks in a rectangle. Decide how large a mat you want to make and keep building until you have a suitably sized mat. Measure and cut some shelf liner to fit the rectangle of corks.

Start by creating a frame by gluing corks all around the shelf mat. Allow the glue to cool and then place the remaining corks inside the frame. Move and trim corks if necessary to make them fit neatly.

Remove each cork individually, glue and re-position until all the corks are in place. Allow the glue to cool. Enjoy your quirky bathroom wine cork mat.

5. Coat Hook

Need a place to hang a towel in the bathroom? Fasten a wine cork to the back of a bedroom or bathroom door for a handy coat hook. A champagne cork will have a naturally wider end to retain a bathrobe or towel.

6. Drawer Pull

You’re looking forward to a glass of your favorite wine. You have the bottle but where is the corkscrew kept. You wish you could go straight to it but it could be in one of several drawers.

Simplify the hunt for the corkscrew by always keeping it in the same drawer. But which drawer should you use? Does it go with silverware, or kitchen implements or that drawer that has miscellaneous things in it?

It doesn’t matter. Just decide and change the drawer pull you choose to a champagne bottle cork. You’ll never forget which drawer the corkscrew is kept in.

7. Keep Furniture Steady

Do you have an annoying table that wobbles? Perhaps it’s the table or perhaps it’s the floor but whichever it is it’s irritating. You need something to place under the table leg to steady it.

Take a wine bottle cork and cut round slices from it of various depths. Try placing them under the table leg until you find one that stabilizes the table. You can even glue the cork to the table leg for a permanent fix.

8. Pin Cushion

Stray pins can easily get lost and then give you a nasty surprise when you step on them. Use a wine cork as a temporary pin cushion. If you sew regularly, you can create a more permanent pin cushion by decorating a cork.

Transform a champagne style cork into a cute mushroom. Paint the top red with white spots and paint the stem white. You’ll easily find your pin cushion and never lose a pin again.

9. Wine Cork Noticeboard

Take a photo frame and remove the glass. Glue corks to the inside of the frame until the surface is completely covered in corks. Hang the frame and corks on the wall with a supply of colorful pins.

Pin keys, tickets and reminders to the board. For example, a reminder saying “buy wine!”

Fun Things to Do with Wine Corks
