When working in an ER, there’s no telling what you might run into. Nurses and doctors alike come face to face with gruesome, tragic, and straight up bizarre injuries or incidents. And with little time to react, they have no choice but to pick up the ball and run with it.

6. Careful On The Farm!

Louis Davis, an ER nurse in the United Kingdom, tells of a time when a patient entered the emergency room claiming that his arm had been, “lopped off.” Davis explained how the patient gestured towards his left arm with confidence. Davis and fellow co-workers were quite skeptical.

But after removing a blanket that the patient had wrapped around his left side, they were greeted with his gruesome reality. Not only did they remove the blanket, but they removed his left arm with it. What was the man’s reaction?

To simply say, “I told you so.”

5. Got Worms?

Now how often do you hear of doctors and nurses not being able to stomach a certain situation? Not too often. I mean, that’s why they do what they do because they have the stomach for it. 

Well, coming in at #5 is one for the books! A.J. Marsden, Ph.D., a former United States Army surgical nurse, is now an assistant professor at Beacon College. Her field is human services and psychology.

She tells of the time when a younger lady came into the department crying because something was in her bottom. Naturally, Dr. Marsden assumed that it was something that the patient or her partner had placed there. But she couldn’t have been more wrong. 

After asking the patient to lower her pants so she could take a look, Dr. Marsden recalls, “that’s when I realized the object was peering back at me.” A large parasitic worm was stuck in her anus. And Dr. Marsden speaks of it as the one and only time her stomach couldn’t handle a patient. 

She ultimately ended up vomiting after seeing the patient. Try getting that image out of your head.

4. The Stool Of Doom.

More often than not, nurses meet patients in the ER with foreign objects stuck inside orifices. So situations like these don’t come with much surprise. But a New York RN, Rebecca Lee has a crazier story to tell. 

She recounts the time when a man came into the emergency room complaining of intense pain in his rectum. He had noted that a “foreign body” was stuck inside his anus. After a complete examination, the foreign object turned out to be a wooden stool leg. 

When questioned on the incident, the patient explained that he “fell onto it” and couldn’t get it out. And Lee added that he asked them to not mention it to his wife. Seems like this guy is in a bit of a “stick-u-ation.” 

3. Here, Take A Breath Mint.

Landing in the #3 spot is a story told by a doctor about a man whose wife insisted on bringing him in for his bad breath. The man had a small bump under his tongue and claimed that it would come and go from time to time. At first glance, the small bump appeared to be a white head with an infection.

But after further examination, the doctor realized that the bump would not drain to relieve puss. Instead, under the skin was something hard. And when he pulled it out, it was a 23-millimeter salivary duct stone! 

The average salivary duct stone is around 10 millimeters. That was a mouthful!

This guy was in need of some serious pain management! According to this company, an all-natural solution could have helped ease some of his pains.

2. Shattered To Pieces!

Dr. Marsden brings us another ER story strange enough to make it to #2 on our list. 

She tells the memory of a time when a man claimed to be experiencing incredibly painful symptoms of kidney stones. The pain must have been quite awful. Because he decided to take matters into his own hands. 

Dr. Marsden remembers the patient saying that he didn’t know what to do so he stuck a glass tube up his urethra to try to relieve his pain. But once he placed the tube inside, a sudden movement caused the glass to shatter inside. And they took him straight into the ER. 

This probably caused more pain than before. But at least it was the glass that shattered and not his dreams. 

1. Eaten Alive!

Talk about some strange emergency room stories. Coming in at #1 on our list is a story brought to us by a Reddit user who tells about the time when a 500-pound man was admitted into their emergency room. He came in smelling like rotting flesh. 

He was found rotting inside of a car. And he had to be cut out of the car. What’s even more gruesome is that he had open wounds deep enough to expose his bones. And the decomposing flesh was being eaten by live maggots.
