Getting Weird With Whiskey: Weird Whiskey Facts You Never Knew

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

George Bernard Shaw claimed that “whiskey is liquid sunshine.

Nobody is here to disagree.

If you love it as much as Shaw, you ought to learn a little more about this unique drink.

Here are weird whiskey facts you didn’t know, but should.

The Oldest Whisky in the World: Glenavon Special Liqueur Whisky

This whisky’s birthday is a mystery but is probably between 1851-1858, making it at least 160 years old.

Made in Scotland, a 14-ounce bottle of it sold for 14,850 euros ($16,756).

And yes, it is the oldest whisky, not whiskey.

“Whiskey” Versus “Whisky”

Like many other words, whiskey has alternative spelling that has unique reasoning and history behind it.

This blog discusses that an “e” appears in Irish and American versions, while the “e” is absent for Scottish and Canadian versions.

The distinction is subtle but indicates where the whiskey (whisky) originated.  By the spelling of it, we can tell that the next whiskey discussed is American.

Whiskey Is Alabama’s State Drink

This southern state said “screw your milk and juice! Conecuh Ridge Whiskey is our state drink!” (Not verbatim, but that’s what we picked up from it).

This high-quality aged moonshine was illegally made in Alabama during prohibition.

Whiskey made it’s way around during prohibition in another sneaky way, too.

Whiskey Prescription Anybody?

Although alcohol was illegal in the U.S. during prohibition, you could still drink whiskey if you had a prescription.

This may be what gave Walgreens a huge boost in the 1900s, going from 20 stores to hundreds.

If it was a medically prescribed substance, there must be some benefits, right?

Health Benefits From Whiskey

We should preface that moderation is necessary with anything and everything. Drinking problems are severe and common.

But research claims that whiskey may have a wide array of medical benefits, including having a positive effect on diabetes, stress, immunity, memory, cancer, and more.

Maybe this is what the Gaelic people were thinking when they said uisge beatha.

Uisge Beatha — Water of Life

Uisge Beatha, or usquebaugh, is the Gaelic way to speak about liquid sunshine.

They translated it from the Latin aqua vitae, the water of life.

Perhaps this was due to its medicinal benefits, intoxicating qualities, or the simple fact that even the angels wanted a taste of it.

The Angel’s Share

Yes, even angels drink whiskey

As a matter of fact, they drink a portion of every barrel made.

This is the angel’s share, or the amount of whiskey that evaporates from the barrel or cask each year.

The percentage varies by place of production but floats between 4-8%.

If you want to protect your whiskey from those darned angels, keep it in a bottle. They can’t get past glass walls.

Which brings us to the question: does whiskey go bad?  What if it’s bottled?

Bottled Whiskey Is Immortal

Speaking of keeping whiskey bottled, if you keep it sealed and out of sunlight, it will last forever.

Whiskey will taste the same forever. If it is in sunlight or not resealed properly after opening, the palate of it will change.

Keep this in mind if you come across a high-end bottle, or if you want to keep a whiskey made from a unique grain.

Whiskey Is Adaptable

You can use any grain to make whiskey. It doesn’t have to come from barley (resulting in malt whiskey).

You can make it from brown rice, oats, and even quinoa.

This might cause whiskey connoisseurs to turn their nose up, as it is not the traditional way of working with whiskey.

If you want to impress these types of whiskey professionals, here are a few tips on how to drink a glass.

There’s a “Correct” Way to Drink Whiskey

There is a way to drink whiskey to honor its flavors and aromas, similar to wine.

First, you’ll want to take a few deep inhales of your whiskey. Order it neat so you can taste the whiskey’s original form before diluting it with water or ice.

As you sip it, keep it in your mouth and roll it around your tongue. This will allow the flavors to soak into every part of your mouth.

Wait a bit to take another sip. That way, you can get the aftertastes before starting the process over again.

At this point, you’ll want to add a splash of water (preferably spring water) to your glass. This dulls out the alcohol and brings out other subtle flavors.

Some say that it should take you 40 minutes to an hour to drink your whiskey unless you’re shooting it.  No need to time yourself — just keep in mind that it’s intended to be a slow, savored drink.

Ice dilutes whiskey and numbs your taste buds but you should drink however you please. It’s your drink, after all.

You may even want to add soda to your whiskey.

Mountain Dew and Whiskey:  “It’ll Tickle Your Innards!”

That was the original tagline for the popular soda Mountain Dew.

Along with this ridiculous line, the original intention for this drink was to pair it with whiskey.  Its name came from mountain-brewed moonshine, after all.

You can drink it neat, you can drink it with water — whatever suits your fancy.

What you mix with it doesn’t matter as much as the water you create it with.

Source Matters When Making Whiskey

“You’re only as good as the water you make whiskey with,” claims Jack Daniels master distiller Jeff Arnett.

“You can make bad whiskey with good water, but you still have to start with good water.”

He suggests cold, mineral-rich, iron-free water is the way to go.

This is a strange, small detail for most of us consumers. But hey, if we ever decide to produce whiskey one day, we’ll keep that information in mind.

Final Words of Whiskey Facts: “What Whiskey Will Not Cure, There Is No Cure For”

This Irish proverb gets at what we’re getting at: whiskey is a versatile, extraordinary drink.

It’s not the only liquor that can claim this, however.

Check out these 10 facts about alcohol that will surprise you, perhaps more than these whiskey facts did.
