The Top 10 Weirdest Places on Earth to Visit

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Are you a seasoned adventurer looking for a new place to explore? Do you have vacation time coming up and want to make it memorable?

We happen to know a few places around the world that stand out from your usual vacation spots.

Our list of locations are situated in areas with very unique settings. The geography provides landmarks that make great additions to your photo collection, as well as views that are hard to come by.

You may have to do some hiking, biking and other forms of physical travel, but the sites make the workout completely worth it. By following our tips, you will be able to get the most out of these locations.

Here are the top 10 weirdest places on Earth to visit if you want some experiences to share with everyone back at home.

1. Thor’s Well (Oregon, USA)

The West Coast of the United States is full of beautiful sites if you want to get closer to nature. A prime example is Thor’s Well in Cape Perpetua, Oregon, which is a must for those who love the ocean.

This spot is known as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon for a reason. The large sinkhole is a site to behold, both when water is crashing in and when it shoots water upward.

You’ll want to take in the view of Thor’s Well from a safe distance. It can be easy to get caught up in the waves if you’re close enough, especially during high tide.

Taking the Captain Cook Trail from the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area visitor centre is the best way to get to the well. We advise waiting for good weather to have the most pleasant visit.

2. The Tianzi Mountains (China)

Moving over to China, travelers will want to see what kind of climbs the Tianzi Mountains have to offer. This will be different from the mountain trips you are probably used to.

The Tianzi range is made up of narrow limestone pinnacles rather than the fold, dome and volcanic mountains you normally see in popular vacation spots. These pinnacles stand at over 4,000 feet, which means a long trip to the top.

You’ll need to take a cable car through the villages near the peaks in order to get to the top. Afterwards, plenty of hiking trails are available to get to high points.

The pinnacles are high enough to put you over the fog, which should make the pictures you share on social media even cooler. If they remind you of the mountains in “Avatar,” it’s because they were the inspiration.

3. Die Rakotzbruck (Germany)

If you’re wondering what weird places Germany has to offer, you should see what Die Rakotzbruck can do for you. Despite translating to Devil’s Bridge, the scenery on a sunny day is nothing but beautiful.

The bridge is made of stone and looks like something out of a Disney movie. The reflection in the water, combined with the trees surrounding the bridge, add to the fantasy-like setting.

This spot is better for views than actually walking on it. The bridge was built in the 19th century, and it was designed specifically to create a perfect circle in its reflection.

The feel associated with the term “Devil’s Bridge” applies better when you’re visiting at night. We advise stopping by when the sun is setting, but get back to civilization while the sun is still out if you want to feel safe.

4. Lake Hillier (Australia)

Large bodies of water can provide the same awe and wonder that come with mountains and plateaus. That’s where Lake Hillier comes in, which isn’t like the clear, blue lakes you’re used to seeing.

Australia is home to plenty of unusual places, but this one gets attention because of the color of water. The water in this water is deep pink, and this color stays the same throughout the year.

Scientists say that the color is due to a combination of high levels of salt and single-celled algae called Dunaliella making the lake its home. Pink bacteria known as halobacteria is also common in this lake.

Lake Hillier’s location in the wilderness makes it hard to reach, so a small plane trip is the best way to get a view. However, if you manage to reach it on land, it is still safe to deep your feet in or go for a little swim.

5. Cat Island (Japan)

Certain locations around the world are known for being populated by one unique species. When it comes to Japan, Tashirojima fits the bill by being the home of over 100 cats.

Also called Cat Island, this island is among the strangest places on Earth for having a cat population greater than its human population. You’ll be fine at this spot as long as you don’t have allergies.

The cat shrine and cat-shaped cabins for tourists are symbols of the animal’s reputation on the island. They are also seen as good luck by fishermen, which should come in handy if you plan on fishing during your visit.

You can get to Tashirojima on a ferry from the east coast of Japan. Be sure to try unique ways to pack so that you don’t carry too much but have everything you need.

6. The Nazca Lines (Peru)

Some of the most unusual places to visit are those that you need to get a view of from far away. If you have a vacation planned for Peru, then a prime example is the Nazca Lines.

These geoglyphs were made thousands of years ago from depressions and incisions in the soil. The designs are based on animals, plants, symbols and other figures.

Due to the Nazca Lines’ location, your best bet of getting a view are from air shots or high levels of large towers. However, the geoglyphs are large enough to be clearly visible.

The figures are also made up of over 100,000 lines, leaving you not shortage of images to check out. This may be a chance for aspiring artists to get ideas.

7. Badab-e Surt (Iran)

Formations in nature come in all shapes in sizes, giving birth to strange places with beautiful scenery. Iran is full of such locations, among them being Badab-e Surt.

This spot combines land and water for a photo-worthy site. The travertine terraces are situated right above two hot springs.

The limestone and reddish color of the terraces, as well as the sand and green bushes in the background, add color to the area. The flowing and cooling of the springs’ water is also responsible for the formations.

If you’re staying in the city of Sari, you won’t have to drive far to Badab-e Surt. This spot is 59 miles away, and regular cars can get you there in good weather.

8. Bangkok Airplane Graveyard (Thailand)

Some unique locations on Earth are a little closer to civilization, even in more populated areas. Those with plans to visit Thailand should take time to stop by Bangkok’s Airplane Graveyard.

Planes of different sizes make up this area. The owner of the yard sells plane parts for scrap in case you want to take home a souvenir.

This yard is also home to many families and serves as a source of shelter and income for them. They are able to make money by recycling parts or selling them to tourists.

Boat trips will get you to the Airplane Graveyard easily if you want to avoid the city’s traffic. It also helps to make sure you have the right documents when visit Thailand, such as if you renew uk passport.

9. Catacombs of Paris (France, Weirdest Places on Earth)

Paris also proves that you don’t have to leave big cities to find odd areas. Thanks to the Catacombs of Paris, you can go underground to discover interesting settings.

You will find plenty of skulls and bones in these tunnels, as they serve as the resting place of over 6 million natives of the city. The remains originated from overcrowded graveyards and were taken to the tunnels between the 18th and 19th century, possibly so that the cemeteries still had space.

Tours are available from the late morning to the late evening. However, the design and lighting keep the setting mysterious and eerie.

The architecture of the tunnels is made up of designs you would normally see in long-lasting buildings above the ground. Combining the architecture with the bones and geology will make you feel like you traveled back in time.

10. Fly Geyser (Nevada, USA)

Back to America, Nevada is known for more than being the home of the gambling and shining lights of Las Vegas. Natural wonders also bring people to this state, especially Fly Geyser.

While this spring, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser, is smaller than most, it’s structure and color is what makes it popular. The minerals and algae in the water give the formation an almost rainbow-like shade.

Situated in Black Rock Desert, the fountain erupts geothermal waters into the air up to five feet into the air. The minerals built up inside is causing the cone to grow several inches each year.

Visitors can also participate in art projects or cultural experiments if they want to have some extra fun. Walks are available so that you can get great views of the geyser from different angles.
