If you know anything about the current president, you know he loves his name plastered on big buildings and you know that he hates former President Barack Obama.  Some visionary has decided what if those two things could merge into one?

And thus the petition to rename a portion Fifth Avenue in Manhattan was born. The petition reads, “We request the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed “President Barack H. Obama Avenue.” Any addresses on that stretch of Fifth Avenue should be changed accordingly.”  One of the addresses on that particular stretch of street is Trump Tower.  The crown jewel of Trump’s real estate prowess.  It’s also where he sometimes stays when in the area.

The petition’s organizer Elizabeth Rowin says it all started as kind of a joke until she reached out to City Council which ran with the idea.

It really isn’t such a crazy idea.  The 44th President’s name has already been commemorated through two holidays (in Illinois and Kenya), a plaza, topography (Mount Obama in Antigua),  18 schools, and 14 animals and insects.

When it comes to naming streets and roads after Obama, New York is a bit tardy to the party.  California already has President Barack H. Obama Highway, Obama Way, and Obama Boulevard. Illinois has Barack Obama Presidential Expressway and South Barack Obama Avenue and three other states share seven different highways, streets and avenues bearing his name.

Other countries have even paid hommage to Obama like Spain which named a street in Valencia, Avinguda Barack Obama.  The street was named to honor Obama for “being an icon multiculturalism.”

Petition organizers have a target of 275k signatures.  They’re off to a pretty good start with more than 80,000 people already signed off including a few celebrities.

The petition that started as a joke is gaining momentum.  It does cause one pause to think, ‘have we sunken to this level-of naming a street after another person just to irk another person?’  In a time when we are locking children in cages; screaming send them back as a political weapon to intimidate Americans of color; colluding to let the rich live above the law– then the answer is simple. Yes, we have sunken to that level.
