Review: World's Weirdest Homes

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you may have noticed World’s Weirdest Homes, a documentary that popped up on New Releases a couple of months ago.

Since I’m really tired from my trip, I’ve been taking it easy while tackling the backlog of work.

Watching documentaries is my way of taking it easy. With laptop on my lap, I work on a writing project while I gain information about esoteric topics.

World’s Weirdest Homes showcases what the narrator calls the 10 Weirdest Homes in the world.

The documentary is actually a showcase of the ingenuity and imagination of people. I mean, how many people look at a dumpster and think, “I could turn that into a house.”

The 10 weird homes showcased range from the primitive—a home inside a concrete structure of a crocodile—to the luxurious and expensive—the round sprawling modernistic home on the French Riviera owned by 96-year-old designer Pierre Cardin.

Most of the occupants of these houses have attempted to make their living space functional in every way, even to interior design. However, the interior of the weird home chosen as number 1 is strictly utilitarian. This home, a decommissioned 727 jet hauled to the middle of a densely wooded forest in the Pacific northwest, isn’t nearly as luxurious as private planes are.

Imagination Leaps

Documentaries like this spur the imagination and give insight into human psychology.

Think about what makes a person want to build and/or live in a home viewed as peculiar by most.

As for spurring the imagination, think about the possibilities inherent in someone finding a decommissioned plane in the middle of a forest.

Can’t you see an action/adventure plot where people needing to escape a location find a plane in the woods?

What if one of those people were a pilot of some sort or perhaps a jet engine mechanic? Could they make the plane flyable again? Could they find a way to clear a path of some sort?

I’ll leave it to your imagination to play “what if” with this idea or maybe with the idea of making your own island as one of the weird home owners did.

World’s Weirdest Homes is an entertaining documentary that will give you ideas about what a home can be and may also give you some story ideas if you’re a writer.
