Lent: Prayer, Confession, Fasting and Charity

Prayer is conversation

A sacred instruction and heartfelt intercession

In lent it is a wonderful occupation,

A hallowed sensation, the heart of lent’s noble’ vocation

Confession is liberation

A lifting of sins stifling burden, a cleansing occasion

In lent it is a joyful sensation

A release from broken self-infatuation, and self inflation

Fasting is blessed distraction

A turning from indulgence and a spiritual formation

In lent it is a worthwhile oblation

A wholehearted attempt at establishing a firm foundation

Charity is our Lenten acclamation

The full stop at the end of lent’s annual notation

In lent it is the souls affirmation

A statement of purpose, an affirmation of intention.

Lent is a sacred time. I know the rest of the year is a call to holiness for us too, but especially so in lent. During lent there is a focus upon seeking to attain holiness by discovering the presence of Christ, and doing this by increasing our awareness of what it takes to answer the universal call to holiness. In lent we engage in the tools provided, engage with our whole selves, finding in prayer, in penance, in charity, and fasting, a path towards holiness, and a path towards Christ.
