5^th Station: Simon helps Jesus carry his Cross

We adore you O Christ and we praise you

Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Here we witness an act of kindness, it may have been begrudgingly given, but it turns out to be a slight relief for the tired and aching body of Jesus carrying the weight of the Cross. I am sure good came from Simon’s part in Jesus’ journey of the Cross, despite his reluctance he is blest by helping and that blessing echoes still today as we recite the devotion of the stations of the Cross.

Acts of kindness are to punctuate our journey, we receive many acts of kindness, there are those we love and who love us. We return kindness with kindnesses of our own. We are grateful, thankful for what others do for us. Sometimes we can take for granted those who love us and show their love, sometimes we can be jealous, resentful, sometimes we can be reluctant to love and we step into Simon’s shoes. We might not feel the inclination to go the extra mile, having such thoughts as “I am to tired” or “I can’t be bothered” but when we do, go out of our way to love others before ourselves then like Simon good can result.
