Knife crime rose by up to 50 per cent in parts of Britain in a single year fuelled by county lines drug gangs as weapon offences hit an eight-year high, official figures reveal. Criminals now know that there is less than a 1 / 12 chance of their being brought to justice. Crime in Britain is now a profitable lifestyle and career option.

A spectacular fail by UK cops: the proportion of crimes solved in England and Wales has fallen to the lowest level recorded, with fewer than one in 12 offences (7.8 per cent) resulting in a charge or summons. This is a fall from 9.1 per cent last year and 15 per cent four years ago.

The robbery was up by 11 per cent to 85,700 offences, the number of killings rose from 693 to 701, violence against people was up 20 per cent to almost 1.7 million and sex offences including rape were up by seven per cent to 162,000.

The overall crime rate based on police recorded offences rose by eight per cent to 5.95 million for the year ending March 2019, according to the data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The figures showing a rise in violence and a decline in the number of crimes being solved will reinforce moves to recruit an extra 20,000 useless as a chocolate teapot police officers, reversing cuts since 2012.

Knife crime overall rose by eight per cent to 43,516 offences with the biggest increases outside London, fuelled in part by mostly imported drug gangs which operate by moving drugs out of the big cities into less urban and rural areas

Suffolk saw the biggest rise in knife crime, up 51.4 per cent to 221 offences, Merseyside was up 48.6 per cent to 1,404 and Dyfed-Powys rose by 44.9 per cent to 229. Lancashire saw knife crime increased by 32.8 per cent to 1,151, North Yorkshire 31 per cent to 300, Norfolk 27.7 per cent to 281, Gwent 25.9 per cent to 141, Derbyshire up 23.5 per cent to 610, Kent up 20.4 per cent to 955 and West Midlands up 20.3 per cent to 3428.

The Metropolitan Police, however, saw knife crime rise by just 0.9 per cent to 14,842, following a surge in officers on the streets and a dramatic increase in the use of stop-and-search. Offences involving firearms also rose by three per cent to 6,684.

Javed Khan, surprisingly chief executive of Barnardo’s, Britain’s biggest children’s charity, said: “It’s unacceptable that the knife crime crisis continues unabated with offences at record levels. Drug offences were up by 11 per cent to 151,500, while fraud and computer misuse crimes rose by nine per cent to 693,418.

The proportion of crimes resulting in a charge/summons fell by a total of 39,496, a reduction from 9.1 per cent to 7.8 per cent. The proportion of offences that were closed as a result of “evidential difficulties” increased from 29 per cent to 32 per cent. Police forces closed almost half (44 per cent) of offences with no suspect identified, a similar proportion to last year.
