Video: UW-Stout’s Economic Impact

The University of Wisconsin-Stout has released the results of an EMSI Economic Impact Study, and the findings are pretty significant for the regional economy.

Billed as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, UW-Stout has an applied learning method that has helped more than 95% of its graduates find jobs over the last 25 years. EMSI’s study showed that each year the university generates $115 million in spending for the region, and more importantly, past students that live in the area generate another $178.7 million in increased productivity. The total annual impact of the institution is $293.7 million, equating to 2.4% of the regional economy.

In UW-Stout’s press release, Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen noted the university chose EMSI because of its reputation in higher education. EMSI has completed about 1,200 economic impact studies for colleges and universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

“EMSI prides itself on providing data-driven results, which is important for us at UW-Stout,” Sorensen said, referring to the fact that UW-Stout won the 2001 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. “It was clear that EMSI’s model is based on solid theory and the most up-to-date literature. Their reputation is based on accuracy and not advocacy.”

EMSI’s Economic Impact Study estimates the impact of colleges and universities in terms of job and income formation, students’ high earnings, returns to taxpayers, and a broad collection of social benefits and avoided costs.
