Each weekday, Academica Group handpicks the 10 most relevant, interesting, and important stories affecting Canadian university and college professionals and publishes them in an email digest. Earlier this month, the Top Ten turned readers’ attention to the University of New Brunswick’s economic impact study results, in which EMSI estimated that the university has a $1.2 billion impact on the New Brunswick economy.

The release also highlighted the return on investment (ROI) portion of the study, which shows that students, society, and taxpayers receive a return of more than double what they spend on UNB—a story that was also picked up by the New Brunswick Student Alliance.Academica Group provided the following summary of the study, along with links to UNB’s press release, the New Brunswick Student Alliance article, and the full impact study:

The University of New Brunswick has announced the release of a new report finding that UNB has a total economic impact of $1.2 B on NB’s economy. The report was produced by the independent agency Economic Modeling Specialists International, which found that the total impact of UNB is equal to 4.5% of the province’s Gross Domestic Product. The report also found that NB’s students and taxpayers recoup more than double their investment for every $1 spent on the university; students gained on average $2.80 in lifetime earnings for every dollar spent, while $2.80 was returned in provincial income and social savings for the province.
