Senator Ben Sasse Shines

In his first few weeks as a U.S. Senator, Ben Sasse is showing people why conservatives in Nebraska and across the country worked so hard to elect him.

Senator Sasse (pronounced “Sass”) has cosponsored legislation to put term limits on Members of Congress and has been speaking out against Washington’s failure to secure our nation’s borders.

Sasse traveled to Texas last week as a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to see conditions for himself.

In an interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Sasse said weak border enforcement is putting the nation at risk, in part because of the threat of terrorists unlawfully entering the country.

“Jihadi entrants are the real thing that keeps me up at night,” Sasse said. “A guy with a dirty bomb only needs to be successful once to kill a whole heck of a lot of Americans.”

Senator Sasse is also asking whether the president’s executive amnesty allows illegal aliens to receive thousands of dollars from taxpayers.

Sasse believes that illegal aliens who receive Social Security numbers could be entitled to the Earned Income Tax Credit for up to four years.

These “amnesty bonuses” could total as much as $24,000!

“By subsidizing illegal entry with four years’ worth of new tax credits, the IRS would promote lawlessness,” said Sasse. “This program severely undermines the White House’s lip-service to enforcing the law and would increase the burden on law-abiding taxpayers.”

He has written a letter to the Treasury Department’s Inspector General demanding answers and spoke about this issue on Mark Levin’s radio show.

It’s also encouraging to see that Senator Sasse isn’t just speaking out for our principles; he’s also doing the right thing when nobody is looking.

An example of this was a recent vote he cast against an amendment considered during the debate over the Keystone XL pipeline.

The amendment, sponsored by fellow Republican Rob Portman (R-OH), proposed a new federal program to promote “energy efficiency.” It’s yet another way for DC insiders to control the economy and reward their cronies.

The amendment didn’t get much media attention, but Sasse was one of only 5 Republicans to buck their fellow Republican colleague and vote against it. He could have supported it with little consequence, but he did the right thing anyway.

Senator Sasse is a smart, principled leader who’s working to make a real difference. He’s not just saying he’s conservative when it suits him and then voting like a liberal when he’s in Washington.

This is why so many conservatives fought to help him win the primary in Nebraska last year when the GOP establishment backed a weaker candidate.
