Plutonium Released. Body, Lung Scans Being Conducted. 'We Don’t Know What Happened'

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Department of Energy has confirmed the airborne release of Plutonium-239 & Americium-241 from underground nuclear waste storage site near Carlsbad, NM. Body and lung scans are now being conducted for everyone within 100 miles of the site, yet nuclear proponents insist, as usual, there’e no threat to public health or safety and the military nuclear facility has been shuttered.

“We are wondering why it took a couple of days to confirm the radiological event outside of the underground,” said Environment Secretary Ryan Flynn. “We will demand that federal officials share information with the public in real time. That’s the reason we are here.”

Known as the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), the facility is the nation’s only licensed deep geological nuclear waste repository. Approximately 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, the facility is the nation’s so-called solution for permanent disposal of the Department of Energy’s cold war legacy transuranic waste that has been stored at 23 former nuclear-weapons-complex and generation sites located across 13 states.

The term transuranic refers to artificially made radioactive elements, such as neptunium, plutonium, americium, and others, with atomic numbers higher than uranium in the periodic table of elements.

None of those elements are stable and each decays radioactively into other elements.

The event began late on Feb. 15 when air monitors detected elevated radiation levels in the plants underground storage complex located more than 2000 feet beneath the surface. No employees were working underground at the time and those on the surface sheltered in place as a precaution.

Operations at the facility have been halted and workers have been unable reenter the underground storage complex due to high radiation levels.

On Wednesday, tests by the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center, a division of the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University, showed the presence americium and plutonium on at least one air filter retrieved from a sampling station located a half mile from the from the WIPP site.

Normally the filters are retrieved on a daily basis. Given the original incident the previous Friday, the filters had not been retrieved for testing in 5 days.

It is highly disturbing that the Department of Energy waited several days before notifying New Mexico state officials about the airborne release.

According to Russell Hardy, director of the center, the radiation levels are highest ever detected at or around the site.

The Department of Energy states they are still not aware of the cause of the radiation release in underground complex as workers have been unable to get back inside, let alone how radiation managed to get to the surface, if this was a one-time event or an ongoing release.

DOE also indicates operations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant will not resume anytime soon and it could three or four weeks before workers can go underground to survey the possible source of the radiation release.

The DOE on Saturday announced it had shuttered operations in response to an underground radiation sensor. But it wasn’t until Wednesday night that DOE confirmed that radiation had also been released above ground, about a half mile from the plant.

Again, it was not until a Thursday press conference that Jose Franco, manager of the DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office, confirmed publicly that readings from the monitors matched materials from the waste that is stored there, indicating a leak.

Environment Secretary Ryan Flynn said he traveled to Carlsbad as soon as he was told Wednesday night that radiation had been picked up by an above ground air sensor.

Control the Message

Despite the fact that everyone, at least publicly, is shrugging their shoulders as to the cause and severity, Department of Energy Carlsbad Field Office Manager Joe Franco assured the public in a news conference Thursday afternoon that the environment, personnel and public are not at risk.

It is interesting to note that, despite this claim of no risk to the public, the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center is providing free lung and body scans to concerned adult citizens living within a 100-mile radius of the WIPP facility.

Rule number one in crisis management is to control the message. As always with public reporting on nuclear accidents, be it Fukushima,, environmental contamination and health hazards from failing storage tanks at Hanford nuclear site in Washington State or any of the dozens of other radiological incidents and unintentional releases occurring annually at nuclear facilities around the country, all formal statements invariably include the standard boilerplate material indicating “no current threat to the public.

”It’s really sad that when you get older and actually give a shit about these things, you suddenly realize that you are just a fucking number to the Government,” comments Hoppy Hopkins under a video about the nuclear site on YouTube. “Another statistic that will bent and abused by some so called expert who constantly claims that “there is nothing to fear”, a bet they sleep like fucking babies at night.

“How do politicians honestly expect one f..king ounce of trust when everything they spew out is 100% recycled BS. I do hope those fuckers die of cancer, if there is ever a revolution, then there wont be enough lamp posts to hang these bastards

“Its really sad that when you get older and actually give a shit about these things, you suddenly realize that you are just a fucking number to the Government. Another statistic that will bent and abused by some so called expert who constantly claims that ‘there is nothing to fear’, a bet they sleep like fucking babies at night. How do politicians honestly expect one fucking ounce of trust when everything they spew out is 100% recycled BS.

What’s firmly established is that americium and plutonium have been released into the atmosphere. Both elements primarily emit alpha radiation rather than beta or gamma radiation. External exposure to alpha particles isn’t a major health risk because they have a low penetration depth and are usually stopped by skin.

When alpha-emitters, however, are breathed in or ingested, the primary concern with this incident, they are extremely hazardous, can irradiate internal organs and are capable of causing considerable chromosomal damage and cancer.

The underground storage facility stores waste transferred by truck from Los Alamos National Laboratory, N.M., as well as Energy facilities in Idaho and Georgia. Each week it receives 17 to 19 shipments of low-grade nuclear waste like plutonium-contaminated clothing and tools from Los Alamos National Laboratory and other federal nuclear sites around the country.

Last year, that amounted to nearly 1,000 separate shipments being trucked across the nation.

The facility closed for routine maintenance on Feb. 14 and was supposed to re-open March 10, when it would again start taking in waste shipments. Due to the leak, it will not take any new shipments as previously planned on March 10, Franco said. He could not say when it was likely to reopen.

The news of the plutonium leak hits as President Obama pulled a swift one on the American public so yet another dangerous and costly facility can be built in Georgia – at the American reader’s expense.

While AlertsUSA is clearly Islomophobic, its nuclear and other threat alerts are worth registering to receive.

Nuclear – the next generation? Looks like the next generation’s in big trouble.

      • Dustdevil

Deborah, ban nukes, go ahead. Then, when a family member gets cancer, leukemia, etc., and you can’t get so much as an x-ray, let alone a CAT scan or MRI, because no one could process the waste to use the tools to start with, you can look at your father, mother, aunt, uncle or especially child, and say ‘me stopping the one-and-only official dumpsite for waste that would have come from your life being saved was more important than you still being here next year.

I DARE YOU. Careful of what you ‘shoot at’, it might be far bigger than you first thought.

        • Mayhem

You make it sound like the high intensity scans actually do anything in the fight against cancer, Dustdevil. What a horrid accusation to hurl at Deborah; who else do you speak to with that mouth?

        • Jimmy Neutron

Hey, Sparkie. Magnetic Resonant Imaging doesn’t use radiation.

        • Mayhem

But it does require an electrical spike that is seldom available through the grid. Who said MRI’s required nukes? Sparky thanks you for allowing him to clear that up.

    • Dustdevil

Ultra fear-porn article. As for the article, you don’t even begin to mention radiation amounts (even though you seem to have a bunch of ‘the players’ names, you forgot that little-itty-bitty actual thing called a radiation amount, to add to the story and those nasty, horrible filters you talk about.

CEMRC pulled its air sampling station filter on Sunday for testing. The center found 0.092 Becquerels (bcq), a measure of radioactivity, of plutonium and 0.64 bcq of americium on the air filter stationed about half a mile from the WIPP facility. Compared to Fukushima cooking off 300,000 Becquerels, you’re worried about this and going to fear-hype it?

Listen, this is the second time I’ve addressed this on B4IN. It is a detected release. AT THE SAME TIME, this is NOT a waste fuel storage site – it is for transuranic peripheral exposure items. The next time you want to close them down, just say to yourself ‘I don’t need CAT scans, MRI scans, or any form of radioactive medicine ever again’ first. A LOT of what is stored in the depths at WIPP are things like contaminated medical tops, used barium bags, used rubber work boots, work aprons, and so much more. Even the boxes that medicines come in can become contaminated, and must be disposed of – and this IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE U.S. THAT CAN HANDLE TRANSURANIC DISPOSALS. PERIOD.

Now, the real action to ask is, ‘what is broken, what is it going to take to fix it, when can we get it fixed, and why isn’t this a priority for the world right now? The wrong thing to do, is act like some simmering childish totalitarian cave-brat, attack this site, scare those who live near it with unfounded LIES (this is not an open, exposed reactor core, people – and it is NOT going to go ‘fukushima’ when it can’t go critical mass).

All this said, either accept that you have no other place IN THE WORLD to handle radioactive medical waste, tell your kid that just got Lukemia, ‘sorry boy – but you are gonna die, youngun’. The answer is AN ANSWER, not fear-porn-mongering.

BTW, I live within that 100-mile radius, to the east, and the ‘body scans’ are voluntary, at your desire, and they have meters at 10-miles from WIPP that still have not shown ANY contamination, due to the low level of release. What you fools with the fear porn, are doing, is similar to me living in West Texas, and giving blow-by-blow reports of what is happening at Three Mile Island or Fukushima, without getting off my backside to actually go there or check through a valid news source first.

You, of course, do realize you are liable if someone acts as a result of your faulty reporting, and as a result, gets injured, right? RIGHT? I really hope so. GET IT RIGHT, if you are going to report it.

      • LifeIs

Here is what Dustdevil wrote the 16th about WIPP:

        “Dustdevil
It’s a low-level waste dump, like hospital barium and old military tritium compasses. It’s NOT fuel rods or weapons-grade stuff. It’s not even depleted uranium dust from munitions manufacturing. The thing is in a salt mine and a half-mile below earth.

Who’s reporting the readings, what ARE the readings, and what is the source of the apparently ‘open-pit-escape’ of radiation? You DO REALIZE, that this whole thing is all because a little mine car caught fire because someone was drinking on the job, right? The cart wasn’t near the storage vaults, every news story around said that it was ‘a safe event’, and the NRC said the same thing.

Maybe, instead of sheep fear-porn, you can actually do a news report – since you’ve now yelled ‘FIRE!’ in the theater you claim is burning? Nah, didn’t think so.”

A “SAFE EVENT” “NOT NEAR THE STORAGE VAULTS” “HOSPITAL BARIUM AND TRITIUM COMPASSES” <<< LIES.

AND TODAY MORE. "peripheral exposure items," "medical tops" "barium bags"

WIPP was built to hold extremely hazardous waste from nuclear bomb production.

Including plutonium which somehow is NO LONGER HALF A MILE UNDERGROUND. Something very big happened at WIPP.

Gosh, Dustdevil, does that LEGAL LIABILITY FOR FALSE REPORTING work both ways?
SHOULDN'T you go to jail for trying to mislead people about matters of public safety?

        • Deborah Dupre

Thank you very much. False advertising by Big Energy regarding their safe poisons should be enough for lawsuits the way I see it. When is that going to happen?

Readers: These are nuke trolls, who prowl the Web and attack articles opposing nuclear power and weapons. You can spot them because they usually are vitriolic and always promote misinformation. When you see them, please come down hard on them in the comments so other readers know they are serving the interests of the nuclear industry, not humanity. Now here’s the correct information:

Plutonium and americium are not used in medical diagnosis or treatment. No medical radionuclides are made from plutonium or americium. Long-lived ones are made in reactors from uranium (and only a handful of reactors would be needed for this purpose) and short-lived ones are made in cyclotrons near their point of use. So you see the trolls are lying. Period. Don’t listen to them, oppose them.

Plutonium 239 is used in huge amounts for bombs and nuclear reactors, and in small amounts as heat sources on space vehicles. It shouldn’t be used for anything because of its extreme toxicity (only a few inhaled or ingested particles can cause cancer) and long half life. We have more than we will ever be able to use for rational purposes and it will take longer to decay than our species is likely to last given our current suicidal course. There is no rational reason to make more and it’s a tragedy we ever made any.

Americium is also toxic, almost entirely used in the ionization chambers of common smoke detectors. Since it is made from plutonium, it shouldn’t be around, but then we can’t use up our plutonium. This won’t help us get rid of plutonium, however. The exposure from a smoke detector is negligible compared to the radiation in a banana. It is possible to use non-plutonium-derived isotopes for this purpose. It is also used in portable X-ray machines used for exploration by the oil industry, a use that would be unnecessary if we were to stop using fossil fuels, as we should. It is also used in thickness gauges in rolling processes, but doesn’t have to be.

    • paul brown

By the way, all this information is readily available on the Web, in articles on the uses of plutonium and americium, and the production of medical radionuclides. Anyone can access this information and see these trolls are lying.
Incidentally, the claim that these compounds can be used in the cure of cancer is particularly pernicious considering they can cause cancer. Disgusting.

WIPP Plutonium Leak to Kill at Least 32,700 Americans
Let me hit you point blank with the highlights of WIPP.

Using the data already released, the Plutonium released can kill 32,700 Americans

The amount in air is at least 810 TIMES BACKGROUND
      ————————————————————————————-
      http://www.epa.gov/radnet/docs/erd/erd104.pdf

Above is the background level of Plutonium and Uranium in Air from the EPA.

The WIPP Plutonium storage site, in collapsing and corrosive salt caves, had a significant release, which the experts said was “far below any level of concern”. They lied through their teeth.

They tried to pretend that the human health hazard of Plutonium was only 100% from the ionizing radiation, and then used “radiation only” guidelines for whether the EPA would consider it an “action level”. In fact Plutonium’s real killing power if from it being an unnatural heavy metal, with radiation as a “bonus”.

Therefore, when the scientists state that the amount detected is far below EPA action levels, they are lying through their teeth.

Data and calculations are here. Spread the word
