6 Surprising Superstitions That Are Actually Spot-On

According to a poll from Moore, a good percentage of people across the world consider themselves as somewhat superstitious. And whether or not you are part of it, you might, ever so often find yourself acting a certain way that is a well implanted superstitious act that seem to be totally unconnected to the planned result.

In fact, even individuals that are completely ruled by rationality will often take part in superstitious behaviours. They rely upon these not because of magical belief or thinking, but simply due to the fact that these actions or traditions seem to make total sense.

Do you really think that you can just avoid the never-ending influence of superstition? Well, why don’t you check out these surprising superstitions that are actually spot-on?

#1. Avoiding Ladders

This is perhaps one of those oldest tales that tell you to never walk under a ladder. For some, doing so could bring you bad luck. Others, however, believe it is more about acquiring a negative influence on your love life. And as for the case of falling off a ladder, it is said to bring great misfortune since it would leave you broke.

The roots of this superstition are due to the triangular shape, which forms when the ladder is placed against a wall. It basically becomes reminiscent of the Holy Trinity. Apparently, passing to this so-called “trinity” is deemed disrespectful to God and rather suggests an action comforting the devil or evil spirits.

#2. Putting Shoes on the Table

Some people believe that putting new shoes on the table can negatively impact your prosperity in the future. Also, it could lead to a quarrel or, worse, plain bad luck. The tradition is said to be tied to the mining industry. It turns out that when miners passed away, their loved ones would tend to bring their shoes into the household and put them on top of a table.

Whether you believe it or not, putting one’s shoes on the table is not really pleasant to see. Would you want to see some sneakers placed on the same surface where you enjoy a meal? Absolutely not!

#3. Food Fables

Food fables are among the common food superstitions out there, which convey the message of having bad luck. Basically, you will experience the latter if you leave a plate in which there is an unfinished food. You could even invite the devil, especially if you leave the food there overnight.

In reality, though, you will be inviting the likes of mice, roaches, and ants. In other food fables belief, doing so – and dropping the food on you unintentionally – is a bad omen. Even if you do not believe it would bring bad luck whatsoever, you will still be wasting food and leave a mess.

#4. No Bananas

If you are going to step foot on a fishing boat, make sure that you bring with you some bananas. Or, at least, you have a banana in your lunchbox. As funny as it may sound, it makes sense for not bringing a banana on a boat to bring you bad luck. Why? For starters, banana peels can be quite slippery. The last thing you want to happen is walking on the deck and slipping because of a banana peel.

Moreover, banana peels are said to release a toxic gas called methane. This happens whenever the banana peels get fermented. Sure, you might think it would not matter when there is only a single banana. However, if you are bringing with you a larger shipment, the air below the boat’s deck could quickly turn dangerous.

#5. Three to a Match

There is nothing wrong about sharing a match just to light multiple cigarettes. But if you are a soldier in a battlefield, it could be really deadly for you. This superstition reportedly dates back to the Crimean War. Basically, striking a match would enable enemy snipers to locate you; hence, soldiers were advised not to do so. And if it left lit for a second soldier, snipers would likely to have the much-needed chance to aim.

But by the time the third soldier used the match, the snipers would finally be ready to pull the trigger and fire. And with enough preparation to take the shot, they would not need the luck to hit the intended target. While it is okay for you and your friends to share the same match, it would not make sense for you to do this on the battlefield.

#6. The Umbrella Lore

Have you heard about the superstition that opening your umbrella in the house is unlucky? According to the old legend, doing so could rain bad luck. And if you place the open umbrella over your head while indoors, you could meet death within a year or so. Well, you might think that this superstition is utter nonsense. It is alright – you are not alone, though.

But if you think that opening your umbrella at home is not a bad idea, then you are missing a lot. For starters, it is likely for you to knock something over and/or break some lovely family heirloom. In addition, you could possibly poke a person in the eye with the umbrella’s pointy metal ends. Both are absolutely more bad luck, right?

You could say that there is no point in believing these superstitions. But if you do some research, you will know that some them make sense in today’s modern society. And not because they bring bad luck whatsoever, but simply because they could prove lethal to others.

This article reminds me of how the local news feels the need to hold up a snowball because we all KNOW people in areas where it snows have no clue what a snowball looks like.
Or how the news gomers dramatically point to a pothole in the road, because we are all too stupid to know what a pothole is.
Or how the giddy news girls try to tell everyone how to drive in bad weather.

In other words. one giant DUH!
