YouTube Algo Boosts Videos Based On Comments

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The YouTube AI is programmed to assign boost values to all uploaded videos. The YouTube AI goes about the task in a complicated procedural manner (from a coder’s perspective) for the reason that a multitude of studies have shown that the single most important thing about any YouTube video is not the number of views, not the content, not thumbs up / down, not likes and not the thumbnail.

The thumbnail is actually the visual bait that entices someone to decide whether or not, to decide whether or not to watch the video. Yes, the thumbnail is a 2nd step of separation in the increasingly convoluted verbiage of a decision chain.

The most commonly used method for human decision making on whether or not to invest one’s time in watching a given video which is to find out what other people who have already seen it thought about it., by reading the comments. But, not ALL of the comments….

- To determine the level of boosting to be assigned to a given video, the YT algorithm (Through AI), visits every video uploaded to read the first 5 comments, using the aggregated sentiment derived from the first 5 comments as THE primary determining factor. Which logically, is how all of us would have done it.

Knowns:

- The reading by the YouTube AI occurs when the number of comments reaches 5.

~ Relevant aspects of the sentiment to be determined from the first 5 comments are:

           - Overall Positivity = more boosting

           - Overall Negativity = less/no boosting

Within the context of viewing YouTube videos the literature strongly suggests that most people (‘Most’, as usual, doesn’t include the author.), choose whether or not to watch a given video most often by reading the first X number of comments. From the comments people form a subjective conclusion of the overall perceptions of others functioning as the go/no-go decision gate. The closest to this ‘thought dynamic of subjective decision making’ any AI can possibly come due to the impossibility of what I will call, ‘mechanical subjectivity’ is for the AI to use the concept called, “aggregation of sentiment”, by generating a small group of samples of numerically represented equivalents for sentiments necessary statistical purposes then aggregating them into a single value, with the sample size being the first 5 comments.

Unknowns: Anyone with facts or ideas, please elaborate in the comments below.

1. – If / How irrelevant, nonsensical or “completely off-topic, off-subject, off-content and off-creator” comments are evaluated.

2. – If / How duplicate comments (trolls/booster gangs vs. accidents) are reconciled in the aggregateed value.

3. – If /When comments are ever revisited to read the 5 most recent for updating the boost value.

4. – Exactly how and by what criteria the actual sentiment implied by the comment is evaluated, determined and assigned it’s individual value for use by the algorithm.

5. – How each of the sentiment values for the comments are aggregated into a single numeric aggregated value.

6. – How the aggregated value is evaluated to determine the assignable boost value.

Takeaways:

- For YouTube Creators:

- Try to figure out a way that is palatable to you and your subscribers to educate them about how much the way they comment matters. As well as the quality of comments are of utmost importance as feedback, and how it matters to you as a creator that your subscribers understand where and how best they can show themselves to be the most well informed, comment savvy people on YouTube.

- For YouTube Viewers and Channel Subscribers: What can you do to make the world a better place?

1. Comments composed of single words need to be chosen with great care, if not avoided entirely.

2. Comments composed of only a few (2 – 6), words (with or without punctuation) often don’t communicate a complete idea or thought. — A completed thought, is a sentiment.

3. For having the greatest possible influence on a video each of the first 5 comments should be comprised of a complete sentiment. Usually 2 short sentences, without satire or parody as the AI doesn’t really understand those concepts of human communication very well.

Ergo, when it comes to commenting, up your game. Don’t change what you think, such is NOT the idea being advocated here. Change what you feel you need to in order to improve the quality of your written communications online. Expressing a complete thought (sentiment), shuts down otherwise avenues left open for an opposing reply.
