The facts are undeniable to refute any longer. The planet is getting warmer, solar flares will always occur, and large objects will always come down from the sky. Whether it will happen today or tomorrow scientists can’t rightly say. But, it is a certainty that one day sooner than later mankind will be faced with a life altering catastrophe. Is humanity prepared in the eventuality that a massive solar flare or meteor collides with our planet? Are we acknowledging that mankind has accelerated the climate change this planet is going through? Many of the powers that be insist the planet is going through it’s natural change, and, of course solar flares can’t be that bad, or those falling objects the atmosphere will diminish chances of an impact.

As leaders of nations and our very own congress hem and haw over trivial pursuits while the rest of humanity is hopelessly trapped languishing day after day in imposed degradation precious time is squandered by all those trivial pursuits that have little bearing that ensures humanities survival. Time humanity really doesn’t have anyway. But, our leaders keep turning our attention away from the fact that any moment a major catastrophe of Biblical proportions could hit. Sure, the weapons of Mass Destruction could be used to deflect an earth bound meteor or other large terrestrial object. Where we have already over 23,000 nuclear warheads that are now aimed at every other nation it is so reassuring that in and when the event of a killer asteroid or meteor whose trajectory is headed for our planet just maybe mankind can find a common medium and work collectively in solving other crisis that adversely affect mankind.

This is just one tipping point for life as we now know it, Just recently the scientific community issued a warning about the intensity of solar flares and the dangers that they possess. Solar flares have been known to strike Earth with regular frequency. It was the Carrington event, a solar storm of 1859 was the first known indication of what a solar flare could actually do to the planet. A solar coronal mass ejection that hit the Earth in 1859 was one of the largest geomagnetic storms in recorded history. Studies have shown that in the event of a solar flare of this magnitude were to hit earth today civilization as we know it would end. Just as recently in 2012 a solar flare of a similar magnitude just missed the planet. Yet, the powers that be keep denying the facts that one day soon could be our last. Ill prepared to say the least.

Power grids today are not capable of withstanding the magnitude of a large solar flare. All it would take to completely paralyze our whole civilization would be one such solar flare like the Carrington event and all transformers would be literally fried. Global panic would soon overcome the planet. To make matters worse is the fact that the US really has no back up plan or transformers ready to take the place of those that were destroyed when a solar flare hits. The prognosis is very grave for another fact of the matter is that the United States had stopped the manufacture of transformers and practically everything else ever since the early 1970′s.

Since the mid 1970′s the United States has relied on imports for the majority of consumer products. Transformers that we now have on line have been deemed out dated and more prone to fail in the event of even a small magnitude solar flare. With over a year lead time before a new one is imported to the US makes our country very vulnerable to having all our power grids shut down leaving our society completely in the dark. Without power today our way of life would cease to exist.

To date there has been very little that has been done to safeguard our electric grid. Sure, the present Administration has upgraded some of our infrastructure in regards to power grids but not enough to ensure and protect our energy supply will continue uninterrupted in the event of a solar flare hitting our planet. As our congress dickers over petty amounts of money needed to protect our energy grids compared to the staggering cost of the aftermath it really is a no brainier to shore up our energy infrastructure, restore our capabilities in the manufacture of transformers and develop a nation wide green energy transfer system. We have the technology today to make this possible and even have every home across the country energy independent. To make our energy grids resilient to solar flares regardless of their intensity is realistic and not impossible.

Existing policies today that have been and are still coming out of Washington are initiated by greed, selfishness, and apathy. It is no more apparent than what we are witness to today when so much can and should be done to protect the sanctity of life is not done. Since the mid 1980′s the Earth has lost over 20 breeds of animal life. The extinction rates are unprecedented. Is humanity next? I wonder.
