Could Be The Wrong Change

Yesterday Chicago elected a new mayor.  I voted for her but for a free market person it was Solomon’s choice. Neither candidate was free market.

I think the media will run with a narrative and it will be the wrong one.  Here’s the media narrative.

1.  Chicago elected an African American female who was lesbian and not an insider
2. Chicago elected a mayor an aldermen who were not Machine candidates.

They aren’t wrong.

However given the state of the city was this the right course to beat the entrenched Democratic Machine that was highly corrosive to Chicago and the daily lives of Chicagoans?

We will see but given the policy positions of the new mayor and the policy positions of the Socialists I don’t think so.  Socialism is never the right antidote.  Neither are big government programs

I do think Lightfoot is right that we need to get our neighborhoods together.

The fact we elected someone who was not white and not straight isn’t a big deal anymore.  America has moved way past that long ago.  It’s only a big deal to those that need the stereotype to persist because they use it for personal gain

No candidates talked about the $247MM and where they will legitimately find that money.

All candidates threw in with Big Labor who is anti-capitalistic  In her victory speech Lori Lightfoot said Chicago is a shrinking city and we need growth.”

For what it’s worth, the Republican Party in Illinois threw in with the Machine long ago.  They are useless and couldn’t hope to field any candidate for any office.

Interestingly, every suburban bond issue failed save one.  The one that passed was in a very upscale 1% suburb.  The rest of the people see the Springfield tsunami coming.  They know they are overtaxed and said no mas.

Voter turnout was especially low.  In a shrinking city of slightly over 2MM people 300k voted.   The media will report the numbers but there is a severe lack of Hope and a sense of helplessness among residents.  Does voting even matter?  The only bright line between candidates was Macine or not Machine.  If not Machine and aldermanic, socialist.

Maybe the course of Chicago will change but prior data on policies being proposed would say that it won’t

None of the proposed policies will help grow small businesses and create jobs in the city. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic isn’t going to help.

I was at a dinner last night.  Everyone there was plotting their exit
