Study Finds Plastic In 50 Dead Whales, Dolphins, Seals

I knew it.. someday, somewhere there would be research on this topic.. textiles and marine animals. Finally researchers studying plastic debris discovered inside the bodies of dead whales, dolphins and seals say the majority of the items found were synthetic fibers from clothing.

The University of Exeter, looked at the digestive tracts of 50 sea mammals and 10 different species around Great Britain No surprises, but microplastics were found in all animals

• 84% were fibers
• 16% were fragments of larger plastic items.
• 60% of the fibers were Nylon.

Nylon is a key ingredient in socks, bathing suits, shorts and T-shirts, tents, umbrellas, beach chairs and many towels. These are the most frequently picked up pieces of beach trash.

The study does not conclude that the animals were killed by textiles or microplastics. It is just saying that 50 of of 50 dead sea animals have microplastics in them.. which is not good news and doesn’t bode well for the future.
