Went to the Halifax River yesterday to take a look at the waters of the Inter Coastal Waterway. I brought my camera to show you what I found there.

Walking out to the dock that I had spent much time on with my children fishing in past years I was finding something unusual for these waters.

Looking down in the water it was clear as spring water.

Normally the water is murky, but this is remarkably clear.

The waters here are low tide and 1 to 2 feet deep.

I have noticed this over the past few months, that areas of waters were becoming like this.

It started about the time the Algae started to appear also.

I have never seen such an abundance of algae in these waters.

The algae seems to be everywhere in ponds. lakes locally also and this is winter ?

Besides the green hairy lengths of green algae there seems to be a sea kelp type green growth.

The algae became visible here in Sept. 2010 when I noticed it clinging to the seawalls.

Now as we can see it has been forming all over the bottom of the river here.

The sad part is that I saw No life in the river at all,

no crabs, no fiddler crabs, no fish, no minnows,

nothing that one would normally see. Do you see anything in the water ?

I looked often to the deeper waters in the river and saw no fish jumping on this day.

There are seagulls on the dock feeding from a picnickers on a bench throwing bread to them.

The waist from the birds seem to be mostly palm berries that are not digested.

At lest there are seagulls here now unlike last summer where there were such very few on the river.

I will be updating on this spot in the future to see more changes that may accrue.

Just up the road about a mile or so, a few days ago.

Now these pictures are near under the 40 Bridge to show the algae that is here.

It is heavy and continues to grow even after the freezes here.

I saw nothing in the water here as well, but last week did spot some 3 baby crabs about an inch to an inch and half across Dead upside down on the bottom.

The picture below is of the same place one month ago… See the increase of growth of algae.

The damaged by freeze is gray colored taken last month at the same area below.

Much of the dead algae is under water and is gray. Notice the clear water.

I have never seen algae growing like this, or the water so clean, but if there were minerals such as iron added to the dispersant’s sprayed into the Gulf, that may explain much. My concern is that much of the life giving smallest of inhabitants that used to live in these waters are no longer here, as well as many of the others creatures that used to thrive. The waters are just too clear !

I have on file some more pictures and will add later…..
